King of elephants, knave of theory

My two year old son loves the pictures in this book, especially the giant blue whale and the tan camels. But don't take it too seriously as an introduction to mixing color. Babar may be king of the elephants but as a color theorist, he's a lightweight. Babar tells us that mixing the three primary colors makes black. Then, a few pages later, he tells us that to make brown you have to mix the three primary colors PLUS black. What? But I thought... Also strange--the "what will you paint with white?" illustration done in ice blue and every color BUT white. The problem isn't the contradictions but the fact that De Brunhoff sets himself up with the difficult task of bridging color theory, practice, and artistic convention in less than 30 pages. In a children's book! But kids will probably like the bright, clean illustrations. Also odd (in a non-color mixing way)--the page where Flora, Babar's elephant daughter, paints a herd of ten naked elephants.

Fun even for "non-Babar" fans!

Even if you're not a Babar fan, you should seriously consider this over-sized book filled with vibrant illustrations. It's a fun introduction on how mixing two or more colors can create a whole new color. And yes (as the other reviewer correctly points out) some of the suggested mixing formulas aren't likely to produce the same outcome as the book would suggest, but hey, this is Babar's Book of Color afterall... not Isaac Newton's theory of color.

An excellent intorduction to linear regression

Pedhazur's third edition of this text that he began with Kerlinger is an excellent introduction to linear regression. I use this text in a statistics course that I teach to first-year graduate students and they have responded favourably to me about the book. Pedhazur is a stickler for 'getting it right,' which is critically important for the serious student to learn at this stage. The book is replete with examples of both doing it right and doing it wrong (the latter culled from the literature). If you want to learn how to do linear regression correctly, this text is excellent within its scope as a primer. The introductory chapters on multilevel modelling and logistic regression are nice touches. All in all a very useful text.

Quirky but a landmark achievement

If you're serious about learning quantitative research, well, this man takes his work very, very seriously, much to our benefit. He has an extraordinary intellect. I would call the book "magisterial" if his self-importance weren't taken to such hilarious heights. But that comic relief is welcome, too.

The book plumbs the depths of the general linear model, providing extensive, rigorous, extremely well-considered treatment of statistical control, linear regression, analysis of covariance, logistic regression, and structural equation modeling. Includes important sections on topics such as nonlinear relationships and interactions. Has sections that I reread every few months to a year because the ideas are so important to my understanding of analytic issues and so hard to come by anywhere else.

It's not for beginners, but don't wait too long! You'll kick yourself for all the insights you could have developed, and all the conceptual and technical mistakes you could have avoided.

Two drawbacks. There is too much attention to SPSS, SAS, and other code for many people's taste. Also, it is weighted down by unnecessarily precise calculation, overemphasizing hypothesis testing and statistical significance at the expense of the size of effects. A Great Regression Book for a Class Devoted to Regression

This is a wonderful text for a class primarily dedicated to multiple regression. I own and have read many regression textbooks, and this continues to be one of the very best! The reader reviews below appear to mostly be expressing frustration with instructors, and not this text. If you are taking an introductory course in which regression is one of many topics, this book may be too advanced for your needs (and may be a poor choice by your instructor!). However, if you are taking a course dedicated to regression (linear and logistic; or general linear models in general), this is one of the very best text available!

This award-winning book presents a realistic picture of therapy's rewards and challenges through sixteen actual cases involving children and adolescents. Readers are exposed to a variety of counseling theories and the real, live counselors who use them. The cases deal with major problem areas such as sexual abuse, dual diagnoses, seriously dysfunctional families, and addictions. A five-part organization of each case covers: an introduction that discusses the presenting problem and background information about the client; conceptualization of therapeutic goals and strategies; process descriptions of actual client contacts (it explains what happened in sessions and how the therapist's relationship with the client changed over time); outcome sections describing the result of the work done between therapist and client; and discussion explanations of what the author/therapist might have done differently. In addition, the author describes his or her personal and professional growth that resulted from this encounter with a troubled youngster. For child and adolescent counselors beginning their journey as therapists.

I have to assume that my little casebook meets a need in the field because it's in its third edition. With each new edition, I've added and deleted cases in order to be responsive to changes in the counselors' working environment. In the second edition, I replaced five long-term therapy cases with ones that illustrated brief counseling strategies. Prevailing economic conditions favored short-term interventions, as they still do. In this third edition, I've replaced three private practice cases with ones set in schools. The new cases deal with major problem areas, such as sexual abuse, addictions, dual diagnoses, seriously dysfunctional families, and foster care. School counselors tell me that these are the kinds of cases that they are seeing. The sum is a balanced set of case studies that reflect today's practice in school, agency, and private practice settings.

I think it's significant that several contributors chose case studies from their early days of training and supervised practice. Some have included supervisors as coauthors. This should encourage those of us who train counselors. Those debriefing sessions with a supportive mentor, confronting personal issues, and even the tedious requirement to transcribe dialog have a powerful cumulative effect on the emerging therapist.

This is a hard book to organize because each case is idiosyncratic. It would be nice if I could pigeonhole each case as illustrative of a single counseling method, but real-life cases just don't work that way, so I've simply put them in order of client age.

There's a summary chart (following the table of contents) that allows an at-a-glance comparison of the 16 cases. For example, the reader will see that Suzanne M. Hobson, an elementary-school counselor, employs child-centered therapy to treat a 4-year-old boy suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from physical and sexual abuse.

Each case is organized as follows:

Introduction. The initial paragraphs lay out the presenting problem and background information about the client. The reader should know that in every case the identities of clients have been disguised. (This section is not titled.)

Conceptualization. Here the author discusses therapeutic goals and strategies. The author may justify the use of a specific theoretical orientation, such as Adlerian, systems, cognitive, behavioral. A rationale for diagnosis is also discussed.

Process. Actual client contacts are described. What happened in the sessions? How did the therapist's relationship with the client change over time?

Outcome. The author describes the results, for better or worse. I did not ask authors to present their most successful cases. I was after the cases that touched them.

Discussion. With the benefit of hindsight, the author explains what he or she might have done differently. In addition, the author describes personal and professional growth that resulted from this encounter with a troubled youngster.

Authors have provided their e-mail addresses (see "Biographical Statements") and have assured me that they would love to hear from readers. Take them up on it and get in touch.

I anticipate that readers will develop strong feelings about these cases. At the risk of waxing eloquent, I think this book beats with the pulse of living psychotherapy.

What an awesome book!

Each case study in this book is told by the treating therapist/counselor/social worker/psychiatrist. They describe and critique their most challenging case in dealing with an adolescent. The problems addressed in the cases are varied and range from moderate to severe. We are using this book in a graduate-level counseling course to analyze each case and come up with alternative treatment methods than those that were used. This text gives a deep, in-depth look into the work and feelings of a therapist and their most memorable adolescent client. Highly recommend!

As a result, drawing may become a utilitarian tool for documentation, devoid of any meaningful value in terms of a kind of knowledge that could potentially link the visible and invisible. This book argues that design drawings should be recognized as intermediaries, mediating between the world of ideas and the world of things, spanning the intangible and tangible. The notion of the 'Imaginal' as an intermediary between the invisible and visible is discussed, showing how architectural drawings lend themselves to this notion by performing as creative agents contributing not only to the physical world but also penetrating the realm of concepts. The book argues that this 'in-between' quality to architectural drawing is essential and that it is critical to perceive drawings as subtle bodies that hold physical attributes (for example, form, proportion, color), highly evocative, yet with no matter. Focusing on Islamic geometric architectural drawings, both historical and contemporary, it draws on key philosophical and conceptual notions of imagination from the Islamic tradition as these relate to the creative act. In doing so, this book not only makes important insights into the design process and act of architectural representation, but more broadly it adds to debates on philosophies of the imagination, linking both Western and Islamic traditions.

Playwright Thorne and director Tiffany (who previously collaborated on Hope and Let the Right One In) worked with J.K. Rowling to extend the "Harry Potter" universe with an eighth "installment" in the form of the script from the new West End production. The book starts where the last chapter of Deathly Hallows left off—19 years after the main events of the series—with Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione all saying goodbye to their children as they leave for Hogwarts. As Albus, Harry and Ginny's youngest son, attends Hogwarts, he is plagued by the Potter legacy—something he never wanted—and, as he's sorted into Slytherin, is terrible at Quidditch, and constantly compared to his famous father, he becomes reclusive and angsty. His sole friend is Scorpius Malfoy, the only son of Draco Malfoy—prompting further separation from his father. When Albus hatches a plot to go back in time to save the life of Cedric Diggory—what Albus views as the biggest mistake his father made—time becomes distorted and Harry is left to examine his own life, his relationship with his son, and how love can sometimes be much more complicated than it seems. This is an interesting extension of the "Harry Potter" universe, but readers should go into it knowing that it's its own beast. Rowling didn't write it (much to the fury and vitriol of many fans), and it is in script form, so it loses some of the magic that won over millions of readers back when it all began. However, many of the themes that made the original series great are still in abundance—love and friendship conquering all, facing your flaws and accepting them—so that it simultaneously still feels like a "Harry Potter" tale while remaining its own story. VERDICT It is unlikely that the script will create new Potter followers, owing to its format (reading a script vs. reading a novel is a whole other ballgame), but it's a well-crafted and enjoyable read.—Tyler Hixson, School Library Journal

About the Author
J.K. Rowling is the author of the seven Harry Potter novels, which have sold over 450 million copies and have been translated into 79 languages, and three companion books originally published for charity. She is also the author of The Casual Vacancy, a novel for adults published in 2012, and, under the pseudonym of Robert Galbraith, is the author of the Cormoran Strike crime series. J.K. Rowling is making her screenwriting debut and is a producer on the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a further extension of the Wizarding World, due for release in November 2016.

Jack Thorne writes for theatre, film, television and radio. His theatre credits include Hope and Let The Right One In, both directed by John Tiffany, The Solid Life of Sugarwater for the Graeae Theatre Company, Bunny for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Stacy for the Trafalgar Studios, 2nd May 1997 and When You Cure Me for the Bush. His adaptations include The Physicists for the Donmar Warehouse and Stuart: A Life Backwards for Hightide. On film his credits include War Book, A Long Way Down and The Scouting Book for Boys. For television his credits include The Last Panthers, Don’t Take My Baby, This Is England, The Fades, Glue and Cast-Offs and the upcoming National Treasure. John Tiffany directed Once for which he was the recipient of multiple awards both in the West End and on Broadway. As Associate Director of the Royal Court, his work includes The Twits, Hope and The Pass. He was the director of Let The Right One In for the National Theatre of Scotland, which transferred to the Royal Court, West End and St. Ann’s Warehouse. His other work for the National Theatre of Scotland includes Macbeth (also Broadway), Enquirer, The Missing, Peter Pan, The House of Bernarda Alba, Transform Caithness: Hunter, Be Near Me, Nobody Will Ever Forgive Us, The Bacchae, Black Watch, for which he won the Olivier and Critics’ Circle Best Director Awards, Elizabeth Gordon Quinn and Home: Glasgow. Other recent credits include The Glass Menagerie at A.R.T. and on Broadway and The Ambassador at BAM. Tiffany was Associate Director of the National Theatre of Scotland from 2005 to 2012, and was a Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University in the 2010-2011 academic year.

Let me start by saying this, I love harry potter. I read the books 2-3 times per year since I was a child. I've grown up with these books. These books are a part of me, I've named my children after characters in these books. I have 3 tattoos, all of which are harry potter. I'm a dedicated fan, entirely obsessed to be candid. I have waited for this book like the rest of you.

I can handle the fact that it's written as a play, I was expecting this. I was fully prepared to accept this. I waited all night for this to be released to my kindle (it's 3 a.m and I've just finished). I sped through the cursed child and my final thought was, this was disappointing .

I'm skeptical of how much jk rowling actually contributed to this. I get more of a harry potter vibe from the fantastic beasts trailer than this entire book. The plot was bad, almost everything was bad. It was like a poorly written fanfic.

It sucks that I'm saying this because harry potter is a part of soul. I went into this thinking it was everything I'd ever hoped for.

I'm not saying don't buy the book, by all means buy it. Read it. See for yourself. I'm not being cynical, rowling is the queen of my world. This is the first and likely only bad review I will give regarding her.

Just be warned, this does not feel like harry potter. This was not intricate, well excuted, thought out, or clever. The characters were not true to themselves. I think the best way to go into reading this and saving yourself from despair is to read it as a fanfic and not the true works of rowling. It would be tolerable had her name not been involved, I expected so much more.

And now I will try to purge this book from my memory and continue to live in her past works of art. I still have big hopes for fantastic beasts and that's enough for now.

I want to start this by saying that I am a huge Harry Potter fan. I grew up with Harry, I went to midnight premiers of the books and movies. I was so excited for this play. I wanted to like it. I really really did. If you are a fan I would say read it and form your own opinion. Here is what I thought:

- Where was George?
- Where was Teddy? Because he was in the station in th epilogue.
- Where was Hugo? You know the other child Ron and Hermione have.
- Lily and James Potter… MIA for most of the play. Like James? Was he even in it?
- Why was Ron running the joke shop? He is an Auror. WHAT HAPPENED TO GEORGE? WHY WASN’T HE RUNNING THE SHOP?!
- Let’s talk about Ron. Why was he so non-Ron like? His character, all jokes no supporting and listening to Harry and Hermione. Also he is hardly in the play.
- Harry’s relationship with Albus. Everything about this is upsetting.
o In the last book when they are dropping off the children at the Hogwarts express, the kids are genuinely confused as to why everyone is looking at them and Ron makes a joke saying “I’m famous”. It is deduced that the kids do not know the extent of everything their parents went through to save the world. Yet Albus feel the weight of his dad’s legacy. Huh.
o Then we have Harry SEPARATING Albus and Scorpious. Let’s go back to that epilogue where they all see Draco with his family and a joke gets made about not playing with his son. Which then Hermione corrects and Ron says to beat him on test but not to get too cozy and marry him. Again, making it seem that everything in the past is in the past. Then there is Harry’s history of friends at Hogwarts. He knows. He would not separate his son from his ONLY friend.
- Albus choosing Slytherin for a friend? Awesome.
- The rumors of Voldemort having a child and that not being stopped by the ministry? Stupid. The ministry would have stopped panic about an heir being possible. Also Voldemort was conceived without love. He never cared about having an heir because he wanted to be in power. An heir would have been competition for him.
- More on that point. Bellatrix pregnant. She would have loved to mother the Dark Lords child; there would have been no greater honor. But. This does not work with the original time line. Bella is never pregnant, she fights at the battle. And then the gang goes to Malfoy manor there is no baby in sight. And if. IF. Voldemort would have wanted an heir; wouldn’t he have made it a horcrux and offered it more protection?
- Sexual tension between Scorpious and Albus. Yet Albus has a crush on Delphi and Scorpious on Lily. I feel as though either they should have been opened about their romantic feels towards each other or this should have not been included.
- The flashbacks/dreams Harry has. When Dudley is mentioned (yay!) and you find out petunia is dead. I know she was horrible but I do think Harry would have deep feelings about his mother’s sister passing. I liked the blanket part.
- Bellatrix husband somehow got out of Azkaban and raised Delphi. How did he escape Azkaban? Because there is no way he got pardoned. So how did he escape? And after escaping how was there no alarm over him escaping. Sirius Black escapes and the freaking muggle minister is alerted! Then there is a massive breakout and it is all over the daily prophet. But hey, this guy who tortured the Longbottoms into insanity he escapes and it’s cool. Yeah, sounds legit.
- The new prophecy. First of all: how did it happen with no one knowing about it except Delphi. Who made it? It’s sounding more and more as if this witch convinced herself that she is the heir of the dark lord.
- Cedric. Cedric a character who was noble and good and died oh so tragically. This character who was loyal and kind and helped Harry turns DARK SIDE?!?! BECAUSE HE LOSES THE CUP. WHAT?!?! CEDRIC A DEAD EATER HAHAHAHA NOPE NOT FUNNY. Thank you for turning a good character and completely changing him for the worse. Thank goodness you did not include Sirius Black in your play.
- On that same characters changing note. The trolley lady…. Hm. I will just leave it at that.
- Polyjuice potion. That s*** takes a month to make. I read the chamber of secrets. Many times. It takes an effing month. And you need a piece of the person you are changing into. But wait not, here I got some polyjuice potion here in my back pocket and I just happen to carry my dad and his best friends hairs at all times. So let’s change into them and break into the ministry.
- Btw that potion is not necessary because you can transfigure a HUMAN. Seven books and that never came out. Must be very dark magic.
- On the dark magic note. Harry duels Delphi (a eighteen year old) and she is stronger? Um. Do we not recall Harry being a teenager and he beat Voldemort. His wand is the s***. So yeah how does this even make sense?
- The no sugar diet. WHAT. Sounds like something movie Ginny would do, not book Ginny.

Spoilers!!

Huge Harry Potter fan-- 16 years of reading!! So I was incredibly excited for the new one. I keep wondering if there's a therapy group where all the disgruntled fans can congragate and weep together. I'm also refusing to consider in cannon as it was not JKR herself who penned. What they did to the INTEGRITY of these characters. I'm sick over it. The entire 7 book series was about friendship, love and loyalty, and Harry knew that; and most importantly, knew that's what made him different from V. You're telling me, he, Ron and Herm didn't continue to live and instil those values in their children? Rose was a bully, who was prejudice against someone without knowing them first. Harry would never said he wished his kid wasn't his, or sacrificed his kid's only friendship over gosip. Harry wouldn't have choosen work over time with his family, which after all he'd been through WAS ALL HE EVER WANTED.

If someone were to ask me, what is your favorite thing about Harry Potter?, I would hands down reply: Harry Potter's moral integrity, that is the heart of the series. It's his choosing to sacrifice himself for what is good. It's choosing friendship over suspicion. It's a defiant effort to turn towards the pain of loving and losing, then choosing not to love at all. It's choosing to do what right, and best for others even when it hurts, is inconvenient, or scary. It's fighting for truth and justice, even when you're the only one doing it. And when you move away from those central themes, the integrity of who we know Harry (and friends) to have PROVEN himself to be, you destroy Harry Potter and all that he stood for for 7 books. This new book is the worst kind of trash, the one that destroys the soul of our hero.

Also, what they did to calm, measured, quirky, wise Dumbledore, making him a weepy, rude mess, who spoke in cliches, issuing a completely unnecessary "apology" to why Harry was at the Dursleys, when Dumbledore had already apologized profusely for that in HP5 AND severely told off the Dursleys in HP6 for their abusive behavior! It was just phony emotional porn!

And Ron's a proper idiot who got drunk during his wedding?! He would have never disrespected Hermione like that. Hermione was neither clever, nor charming; she didn't come up with hardly any solutions. And what a weak, floppy mess Harry was during the fight scene?! His 16 year old self could have fought better. It's like they sucked the soul out of the books, like a dementor wrote it!! This is not even pointing out the horrible plot holes! No, I refuse this book is real. It's a bloody mess!

About the Author
K. ERIC DREXLER published the first scientific paper on molecular nanotechnology in 1981. In addition, he taught the first course on the subject (at Stanford University) and chaired the first two conferences. He is currently President of the Foresight Institute and a Research Fellow of the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing. He wrote Nanosystems while a Visiting Scholar at the Stanford University Department of Computer Science and continues to lecture at universities and corporations in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. He received his doctoral degree in molecular nanotechnology from MIT.

A rare Fifth Star simply for its place in history.

Finally we may play with the "building blocks of matter" we've been hearing so much about. Here is an instruction manual, detailing the Elements, and their Interactions, while at the same time suggesting possible Design Models for construcion.
Curious about the subject?
Start with Drexler's Engines of Creation, instead. Maybe some other collections of theoretical applications to whet your appetite. Come back to this when you begin to see a bigger picture.
Know some, want to know more?
Definately read. But be warned, it is quite techincal when it is not being necessarily vague. This is a halmark. The basis of this book was Drexler's thesis for his doctorate in Molecular Nanotechnology, the first awarded (MIT 1991, I believe).
Serious about the topic?
You already have access to a copy...or should.
You might very well be able to download significant portions from Foresight's website (it's an org.anization, not a com.mercial); but I would suggest supporting them with at least the price of the book. They seem to be committed to developing this Potential responsibly.

Comprehensive treatise on nanotechnology theory

An outstanding book exploring the possibilities of nanotechnology in amazing detail. Dense textbook equations and charts fill the pages, but somehow Drexler's well-written prose transitions between complex concepts and offers explanations of technical points.

Bruhns, born in Germany in 1938, has worked as a television journalist and a U.S.-based correspondent for Stern magazine. In 1944, her father, Captain Hans Georg Klamroth, was executed for his part in the conspiracy to assassinate Hitler in July of that year. For decades, Bruhns seems to have tried to maintain an emotional distance from the father she barely remembered. When she caught a glimpse of her haggard father while watching a documentary on the trial of the conspirators, she determined to learn more about him and her family. About the Author
Wibke Bruhns was born in 1938 in Halberstadt, Germany. She has worked as a journalist in both TV and print and as a TV host and news broadcaster. She was a correspondent for Stern magazine in the United States and Israel and headed the culture section at one of Germany’s largest radio stations, ORB. She has two grown daughters and now lives and works as a freelance writer in Berlin.

A Daughter's Story

A modern German woman relates in a powerful conversational style the story of her own close-knit and upper-middle class extended family, from the days of the last Kaiser through to Hitler.

One is offered a close view of a Prussian clan devoted to each other, duty to the state, and good order. But good order was absent in Germany at the end of World War I, with many unresolved social, economic, and political grievances setting the stage for the rise of the Nazis. Family members slowly, without due thought, became willing cogs in the ultimately murderous system that Hitler fashioned, until 1944 when the author's father and brother-in-law were involved in an unsuccessful assassination plot aimed at der Fuhrer.

The author does not turn away from relating the painful personal marital failings and political blindness of the very human father she never really knew.

In the end, the reader of Ms. Bruhns' book has a better sense of how the solid "good" people--of the advanced society that was Germany--came to be a part of the conformative and hyper-nationalistic political climate that led directly to the horrors of World War II.

Good book; bad publisher.

I like this book. It's a little sentimental at times and there seems to be a fair share of 'filling in the blanks' with conjecture; still liked it. Since I know little about WWI, this book has aroused my curiosity and I'll be picking some other books on this period as well; always a good thing.

Now the bad news. It POs me off more than a little that this publisher, Knopf, does not permit 'speech' to be enabled. I often travel and one of the things that really attracted me to the Kindle was the ability to read a book and then, while in the car, have the Kindle continue to read the book. Apparently publishers like Knopf are hoping that you'll buy the Kindle edition to read on your Kindle, and then buy the audio book too. Nope. Now only will I not do that, I'll avoid books by this publisher if speech is not enabled.

Lots of Trees, no Forest

The most intriguing thing about Mrs. Bruhns' biography of her father, Hans Georg Klamroth, is the degree of detail she has uncovered about his life from surviving family archives and reminiscenses. I wish I were blessed with as much insight into the life of my own father whom I knew much better than Bruhns ever knew hers. It is indeed a wise child that knows his father.

If one reads this book carefully one can get a fascinating view of an upper-class German family evolving through the tumultuous years of the 20th century. For that reason alone I give MY FATHER'S COUNTRY three stars. Otherwise it is a bore and ultimately a disappointment. It bores because there is just too much detail about the intimate lives of the Klamroths, stuff of no possible interest to anyone but another Klamroth.

It disappoints for two reasons: First, I bought this book because I wanted to know more about Hans Georg's involvement in the plot to assassinate Hitler, for which he gave his life. This climactic event is covered in little detail only at the very end of this book. Second is Mrs. Bruhns' aggravating tendency to intrude her own 21st-century moral judgments on the people of her father's generation. One example is her comment on advice given to her father by her grandfather "to adopt the correct military attitude and impose a sense of duty on your emotions." "What nonsense!" is Mrs. Bruhns' comment. But it was this very "military attitude" that led her father to keep quiet about the assassination conspiracy and to refuse to give up anyone's name under interrogation. One can only imagine what was done to him during those interrogations but still he kept his silence. That is why he was hanged, not because he was directly involved in the attempt on Hitler's life.

The major flaw in MY FATHER'S COUNTRY is demonstrated at the end when Mrs. Bruhns tells a poignant story about one of her first post-war memories as a child. When she innocently asked, "Why does nobody say Heil Hitler anymore?" someone slapped her face for saying that. As 21st-century biographer, her final comment is, "Why did anybody ever say it?" The answer to that important question is in the pages of this book, if you have the patience to dig it out. But Mrs. Bruhns does not see it in the wealth of intimate detail she gives us about her father. In the end she knows a lot but understands little.
