Monique and the Mango Rains: Two Years With a Midwife in Mali, by Kris Holloway

What is it like to live and work in a remote corner of the world and befriend a courageous midwife who breaks traditional roles? Monique and the Mango Rains: Two Years with a Mali Midwife is the inspiring story of Monique Dembele, an accidental midwife who became a legend, and Kris Holloway, the young Peace Corps volunteer who became her closest confidante. In a small village in Mali, West Africa, Monique saved lives and dispensed hope every day in a place where childbirth is a life-and-death matter and where many children are buried before they cut a tooth. Kris worked side-by-side with her as they cared for each other through sickness and tragedy and shared their innermost secrets and hopes.

Monique's life was representative of many women in one of the world's poorest nations, yet she faced her challenges in extraordinary ways. Despite her fiercely traditional society and her limited education she fought for her beliefs birth control, the end of female genital mutilation, the right to receive a salary, and the right to educate her daughters. And she struggled to be with the man she loved. Her story is one of tragedy joy, rebellion, and of an ancient culture in the midst of change. It is an uplifting tribute to indomitable spirits everywhere.

Monique and the Mango Rains is a fascinating voyage to an unforgettable place, a voyage spent close to the ground, immersed in village life, learning first-hand the rhythms of this world. From witnessing her first village birth to the night of Monique's own tragic death, Kris draws on her first-person experiences in Mali, her graduate studies in maternal and child health, medical and clinic records, letters and journals, as well as conversations with Monique, her family, friends and colleagues, to gives readers a unique view and a friend in West Africa.

From Publishers Weekly
This tender, revelatory memoir recalls the two years Holloway spent as an impressionable Peace Corps volunteer in the remote village of Nampossela in Mali, West Africa. It centers on her close friendship with Monique, the village's overburdened midwife. When Holloway (now a nonprofit development specialist) arrived in Nampossela in 1989, she was 22; Monique was only two years her senior. Yet Monique, barely educated, working without electricity, running water, ambulances or emergency rooms, was solely responsible for all births in her village, tending malnourished and overworked pregnant women in her makeshift birthing clinic. With one of the highest rates of maternal death in the world, these Malian women sometimes had to work right up until and directly after giving birth and had no means of contraception. Holloway especially noted Monique's status as an underpaid female whose male family members routinely claimed much of her pay. Monique shared her emotional life with Holloway, who in turn campaigned for her rights at work and raised funds for her struggling clinic. Holloway's moving account vividly presents the tragic consequences of inadequate prenatal and infant health care in the developing world and will interest all those concerned about the realities of women's lives outside the industrialized world. Review
"Poignant and powerful." Starred review Kirkus Reviews "Achingly real." Editorial board favourite Boston Globe "There are many beautiful books by Westerners about living in Africa... The best ones put the readers in the middle of unfamiliar terrain and make them smell it and hear it. This is one of those books." Minneapolis Star Tribune "I shed several tears while reading this book. Monique and the Mango Rains is a true story that rides the ebb and flow of womanhood in Mali. It also sparks inspiration that differences can be made, and are made, when the right ingredients are combined." Midwives Magazine "Holloway has a fresh and sensitive way of relating events... what she sees, hears, what people say, what she learns and the impact of the different seasons... The postscript describes [her and her husband's] return to Mali in 1999 and again in 2007. They continue to support Clinique Monique in the nearby village of Kouri. You could, too." --Mmegi (Botswana) Mmegionline

I will admit I am not a reader and was required to read this book for a college class. Though, I thoroughly enjoyed it! As I got further into the book I found myself not wanting to put it down because I was so curious what would happen next. It is a wonderful tribute to a midwife in Mali, Monique, who is passionate about providing care to the women and children in her very small, rural village of Nampossela. It also tells the story of blossoming friendship between Monique and the author, Holloway as they spend two years together while Holloway is a peace core volunteer in Monique’s village. While the story took place between 1989-1991 it gives great insight to healthcare and all the challenges faced in rural areas in Africa such as Mali. It really is a great read, whether required or not, you should pick it up.

While I thoroughly enjoyed Kris Holloway's succinct and tender account of her time in Mali, I read this book in the context of studying African history. I can't unsee Holloway as a well-meaning white savior figure. The effects of colonialism are alive and well in Africa, from not meeting the eyes of a white person to the automatic authority Holloway enjoys as a westerner. I was saddened, less for Monique and her tragic end, and more for the state of West Africa which colonialism undoubtedly contributed to. I would love to live in a world that visualized Africans as self-sufficient and the keepers of envious traditions and culture. Perhaps such a worldview would enable a brighter future there.

This Book Goes on the "Keep Forever" Shelf!
By A.M.M.
Kris Holloway’s story about her time in the Peace Corp in a dusty village of Mali is really a love story for her friend Monique Dembele, a young West African mid-wife who tirelessly and amazingly cared for the health needs of village women in a place where being a woman often meant a life of drudgery, illness, and exhaustion.

Ms. Holloway’s matter-of-fact writing style matches the world she describes – a place named Nampossela where the Minianka people accept the fact that survival and death can turn on circumstances beyond anyone’s control. Yet, the writing is crisp and clean enough to give the reader the experience of feeling the dust in the air, the dry heat, the thick blackness of the night lit only by stars, the torrential rains, and the feelings of hope and hopelessness universal to all human cultures.

Above all else, Ms. Holloway makes you fall in love with Monique who, despite having the potential to soar above her circumstances, uses her energy and talents to bring health and change to a people resistant to and forgotten by the progress of the modern world. I was consistently eager to get back to Ms. Holloway’s story – to be transported to this African village where, despite the hardships of daily life, one could always hear a note or two of joy in the rituals and simple rites of the culture.

This story will make you acutely aware of things we take for granted. Yet, Ms. Holloway also elicits an appreciation for what we share with one another as human beings who long for family, community, and good lives for our children.

This story is one you will remember long after you read the last page. Monique will take up a place in your memory and heart, and you will be better off for having gotten to know her through the eyes of Kris Holloway.

Buy this digitally.
By SoccerMama777
The book is a great help if you actually have the time to use it. Since my assignments were for my own good and not points it was easy to ignore and not use the book BUT the answers are in the back so it became a good study guide for exams simply by reading through the answers. Maybe if I had had it digitally then I could have done the pages on a "write on PDF" app or something.

Is this the best use of the book? No
Is this the best you are going to get when you are in nursing school? Probably.

Great resource, except for the price guide
By R. Murphy
I agree with those who say that this book is a great reference.
This has a lot of information that is generaly hard to find, especially since general information is hard to find as it is. Most guides like this are for a specificly for one type or area of scouting collectables (OA Flaps etc.). This one does a great job of trying to gather as much as possible in one volume. Lots of photos (too bad that only a few are in color) and drawings, could use more, but then you would run out of room.

The main problem I have, is with the actual price guide. It is far from realistic. As a new collector, I brought this guide to local "Trade-O-Rees", (aka "TOR")to see how accurate it was. I was very surprised, to see that it was not even close for most of the items I checked (I was at the many TORs I visited for at least 2-3 days each).
When I asked the collectors there why this was, they replied that ebay and other internet auction sites had made collecting much easier and cheaper.

But the comment I heard over and over again was that the author had deliberatly listed the items he had at high prices and the items he needed at very low prices. True or false I don't know.

But Over all, NONE of the collectors that I met used this book for its price guide, they used it as a general reference guide. That was the advice I received by more than a dozen collectors.

To follow up, Great reference guide (but needs more color photos), poor price guide.

SCOUT MEMORABILIA PRICE GUIDE
By Lawrence W. Gooss
I was disappointed in this publication. Its prices seemed to be obsolete. That, of course, is only my opinion. I had peviously been a hyperactive collector and the values did not agree with my personal experience.

Old prices for old items.
By polar bear
Its a great resource for those interested in any and all scouting material. There are pictures of most items, which helps. The only down side is that it is dated, copyrighted 2001,so prices are problematic. An update would be of great use!

Because They Hate: A Survivor of Islamic Terror Warns America, by Brigitte Gabriel

"Her writing is eloquent and her passion tremendous."

--Publishers Weekly

"Brigitte Gabriel's words should be read, and studied carefully, by all the law enforcement and government officials of the West -- as well as by everyone who values freedom."

-- Robert Spencer, author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades)

Brigitte Gabriel lost her childhood to militant Islam, when militant Muslims from throughout the Middle East poured into Lebanon and declared jihad against the Lebanese Christians. Because They Hate warns that the US is threatened by fundamentalist Islamic theology in the same way Lebanon was― radical Islam will stop at nothing short of domination of all non-Muslim countries.

Fiercely articulate and passionately committed, Because They Hate tells Gabriel's personal story as well as outlines the history, social movements, and religious divisions that have led to this critical historical conflict.

BRIGITTE GABRIEL is a US-based journalist and news producer who started her career as an anchor for World News, an evening Arabic news program. As a terrorism expert and the founder of the nonprofit organization ACT! for America, Brigitte Gabriel travels widely and speaks regularly on topics related to the Middle East. She has addressed audiences at the FBI, the United States Special Operations Command, the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and the Joint Forces Staff College, among others.

From Publishers Weekly
With strident confidence, American Congress for Truth founder Gabriel rebukes the American public for being "weak, asleep or careless" in the face of Muslim terrorism. A Christian survivor of the vicious civil war between Lebanese Christians and Muslims in the 1970s, Gabriel leans on her own terrifying experiences to condemn Muslims, without apparent regard for their ethnicity, ideology or historical role. Consistently using the words "Muslim" and "Arab" as if they were interchangeable, she concludes that the U.S. is "facing total destruction" at the hands of people who are uncultured and cruel, and prescribes such solutions as "profile, profile and profile," and banning "hate education" in Islamic institutions. Though her writing is eloquent and her passion tremendous, Gabriel's strict dichotomy between "evil versus goodness" is too extreme to be informative. Readers will be forced to decide whether or not to accept her heart-felt bias. (Oct.)

Review

“Brigitte Gabriel eloquently reminds America what is truly at stake in this struggle against terrorism: our families, our way of life, and our hopes. Ms. Gabriel's personal account of her own experience is riveting, compelling and spellbinding. This is a must read for the entire American public . . . Because They Hate contains monumental revelations that will shock and disturb you. But it is also a story of an indomitable spirit--Brigitte's-- that will move you.” ―Steve Emerson, author of American Jihad: The Terrorists Living Amongst Us, Executive Director, the Investigative Project on Terrorism

“[Brigitte Gabriel's] writing is a critical wake-up call to Americans as we face the threat of takeover by jihadists. Excellent read ! Required reading for all Americans
By Mike
Brigitte is an excellent author who writes from personal experience. Her native Lebanon was once a prosperous liberal open society until it was destroyed by radical Islam. This book was written in 2006 and it is truly remarkable to see what has transpired in 10 years thanks to ineffectiveness on the part of both the US and European governments and "political correctness ". Not only do we have ISIS but we also have our president & elected officials continuing to deny/ignore the FACTS that Islam is not a peaceful religion & that it has an agenda to destroy everything we hold dear in our liberal society. As a Christian convert with Jewish blood I am very concerned over the events taking place right now in Europe where Christians & Jews are being assaulted in France as they exit their worship services. This is not being reported much due to political correctness. France will surely be the next Lebanon. If you value your life & the lives of your loved ones, do yourself a huge favor & ignore the mainstream media opinions & analysis when the next terror attack takes place. Listen to an expert who has lived through it all; that expert is Brigitte !

Wake up & smell the coffee.
By PJSB
A very good read, even though it is aimed mainly at an American audience. As they say in the USA, perhaps we, too, should "wake up and smell the coffee". I would also recommend the sequel "They Must Be Stopped". It should also be pointed out, however, that both of these books are mainly speaking of the threat posed by RADICAL Islam, not every muslim.

Great Biography
By Kevin From Crestview FL
Following the footsteps of Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1977 best selling book Arnold: The Education of a Bodybuilder, bodybuilding superstar Lou Ferrigno begins his book with a very open biography. He had to overcome a handicap from birth, as well as his perception of his controlling, sometimes tyrannical father, to become a multi-Mr Universe winner, TV and movie actor, motivational speaker and successful personal trainer.

Akin to the format of Arnold's book, Lou Ferrigno then follows up his biography with a complete bodybuilding program. In this 'chapter', Lou's book shines over Arnold's in that he breaks down a beginner's workout routine week by week. Then Ferrigno delves into specific bodypart training, but I personally recognized it's writings published in muscle magazines.

Overall, I give this book a B+ rating and a recommendation that if you follow his principles and workout routines, you likely will be bigger and more muscular than you are now.

I'm not done yet
By Don Mega
I'm about 1/2way done. The central theme is dedication. He's very dedicated to his family. He's also overcome obstacles like having a father who treats you as a disappointment because you were born with a handicap. Will this book help you look like Lou Ferrigno? I don't know. I know if you follow his advice & specific workout plans, there's a good chance you'll look better than you do now. Have you seen the cover?

inspirational
By capakarpova
phenomenal book. this book is very inspirational because lou had to overcome hearing loss, abusive father who put him down and speech impediment. sure, he would have definitely been mr. olympia if not for the timing of the hulk series. look, even arnold schwarzenegger admitted that lou's potential was even better than his. when the greatest says that about you i agree. this review should definitely answer the reviewer who was mad about paying $20 for a photo of a legend and gave it a one star. amazing

Not for the faint of heart...but read it just the same!
By Sandra Louden
I loved the writing and I felt as if I were there among the four travelers who get in over their heads as they explore the wilds of the rural south. I am not a huge fan of pages upon pages of description; however, author Dickey (even in his copious descriptions) kept his focus and I stayed focused along with him. I must say the book obviously brought back memories of the film, which I saw when I was 20. The movie was different--to say the least--from the era of films I deeply cherish (those being from the 1930s and 1940s). I have never looked at "walking in the woods" in the same way since. The book is part of Time's Greatest Books (1923-2005) list and Deliverance is #30 in the books I've read from this list--so I'm almost 1/3 of the way through my goal of reading all 100. Although I highly recommend this book, it is definitely not for the faint of heart or the squeamish of stomach. Read it at your own risk and even if it, at times, it frightens you, disgusts you or leaves you in turmoil...read it anyway. It's excellently & tightly written.

Gripping, tense, adventure story.
By Bob Jarvis
I watched the movie before reading the book and since the movie is such a hard act to follow, I really think the book stands up well to comparison. The movie is such a faithful reproduction of the book that there really were no surprises when reading this, even 25 years later. As a result, as action-packed as the events described are, the reading experience became a little flat.
Most everyone knows the story, and the plot is well described in these reviews. I would just say that the writing is stark, realistic and as gritty as one could wish for. I found the descriptions of Ed's climb up the rockface and setting for the later ambush just a little too esoteric and lyrical for my taste. Too "arty-crafty" if you like. Although I do admit that the likely reason for this is that the author is probably way too intelligent for me to appreciate. Much better in my opinion are the dialogues between the characters and the thought processes behind their responses to the serious moral dilemmas they find themselves in.
Have to admit that all the time I was reading this book I was visualising the faces of the characters from the movie, so well cast is the movie.
Can't say that reading this book is a particularly enjoyable experience, but a worthwhile experience it certainly is!

An NYU Professor recommended it to me for it's Poetry
By Terry Culkin
Most people think it's crazy that one of my favorite books of all times is Deliverance. I was at NYU for a poetry reading when I talked with a professor there about my writing. I told hime I was trying to incorporate my poetry into the book I was writing. He smiled and asked if I read Deliverance. I said no, but saw the movie. He told me that the writer was a poet and he wrote the book with a lot of poetry and symbolism. The movie didn't reflect that and so I bought the book.
I have read it many times. It is one of the most well written books I have ever read. It takes you inside these people and really opens up your imagination. Enjoy!

The Worthing Saga, by Orson Scott Card

It was a miracle of science that permitted human beings to live, if not forever, then for a long, long time. Some people, anyway. The rich, the powerful--they lived their lives at the rate of one year every ten. Some created two societies: that of people who lived out their normal span and died, and those who slept away the decades, skipping over the intervening years and events. It allowed great plans to be put in motion. It allowed interstellar Empires to be built.

It came near to destroying humanity.

After a long, long time of decadence and stagnation, a few seed ships were sent out to save our species. They carried human embryos and supplies, and teaching robots, and one man. The Worthing Saga is the story of one of these men, Jason WOrthing, and the world he found for the seed he carried.

Orson Scott Card is "a master of the art of storytelling" (Booklist), and The Worthing Saga is a story that only he could have written.

The Day of Pain

In many places in the Peopled Worlds, the pain came suddenly in the midst of the day’s labor. It was as if an ancient and comfortable presence left them, one that they had never noticed until it was gone, and no one knew what to make of it at first, though all knew at once that something had changed deep at the heart of the world. No one saw the brief flare in the star named Argos; it would be years before astronomers would connect the Day of Pain with the End of Worthing. And by then the change was done, the worlds were broken, and the golden age was over.
In Lared’s village, the change came while they slept. That night there were no shepherds in their dreams. Lared’s little sister, Sala, awoke screaming in terror that Grandma was dead, Grandma is dead!
Lared sat up in his truckle bed, trying to dispel his own dreams, for in them he had seen his father carry Grandma to the gave--but that had been long ago, hadn’t it? Father stumbled from the wooden bedstead where he and Mother slept. Not since Sala had been weaned had anyone cried out in the night. Was she hungry?
“Grandma died tonight, like a fly in the fire she died!”
Like a squirrel in the fox’s teeth, thought Lared. Like a lizard in the cat’s mouth, trembling.
“Of course she’s dead,“ Father said, “but not tonight.” He took her in his vast blacksmith’s arms and held her. “Why do you weep now, when Grandma has been dead for such a long time?” But Sala wept on, as if the grief were great and new.
Then Lared looked at Grandma’s old bed. “Father,“ he whispered. Again, “Father.” For there lay her corpse, still new, still stiffening, though Lared so clearly remembered her burial long ago.
Father laid Sala back in her truckle bed, where she burrowed down against the woven straw side, in order not to watch. Lared watched, though, as his father touched the straw tick beside his old mother’s body. “Not cold yet,“ he murmured. Then he cried out in fear and agony, “Mother!” Which woke all the sleepers, even the travelers in the room upstairs; they all came into the sleeping room.
“Do you see it!” cried Father. “Dead a year, at least, and here’s her body not yet cold in her own bed!”
“Dead a year!” cried the old clerk, who had arrived late in the afternoon yesterday, on a donkey. “Nonsense! She served the soup last night. Don’t you remember how she joked with me that if my bed was too cold, your wife would come up and warm it, and if it was too warm, shewould sleep with me?”
Lared tried to sort out his memories. “I remember that, but I remember that she said that long, long ago, and yet I remember she said it to you, and I never saw you before last night.”
“I buried you!” Father cried, and then he knelt at Grandma’s bed and wept. “I buried you, and forgot you, and here you are to grieve me!”
Weeping. It was an unaccustomed sound in the village of Flat Harbor, and no one knew what to do about it. Only hungry infants made such cries, and so Mother said, “Elmo, will you eat something? Let me fetch you something to eat.”
“No!” shouted Elmo. “Don’t you see my mother’s dead?” And he caught his wife by the arm and flung her roughly away. She fell over the stool and struck her head against the table.
This was worse than the corpse lying in the bed, stiff as a dried-out bird. For never in Lared’s life had he seen one human being do harm to another. Father too was aghast at his own temper. “Thano, Thanalo, what have I done?” He scarcely knew how to comfort her as she lay weeping softly on the floor. No one had needed comfort in all their lives. To all the others, Father said, “I was so angry. I have never been so angry before, and yet what did she do? I’ve never felt such a rage, and yet she did me no harm!”
Who could answer him? Something was bitterly wrong with the world, they could see that; they had all felt anger in the past, but till now something had always come between the thought and the act, and calmed them. Now, tonight, that calm was gone. They could feel it in themselves, nothing soothing their fear, nothing telling them worldlessly, All is well.
Sala raised her head above the edge of her bed and said, “The angels are gone, Mama. No one watches us anymore.”
Mother got up from the floor and stumbled over her daughter. “Don’t be foolish, child. There are no angels, except in dreams.”
There is a lie in my mind, Lared said to himself. The traveler came last night, and Grandma spoke to him just as he said, and yet my memory is twisted, for I remember the traveler speaking yesterday, but Grandma answering long ago. Something has bent my memories, for I remember grieving at her graveside, and yet her grave has not been dug.
Mother looked up at Father in awe. “My elbow still hurts, where it struck the floor,“ she said. “It still hurts very much.”
A hurt that lasted! Who had heard of such a thing! And when she lifted her arm, there was a raw and bleeding scrape on it.
“Have I killed you?” asked Father, wonderingly.
“No,“ said Mother. “I don’t think so.”
“Then why does it bleed?”
The old clerk trembled and nodded and his voice quivered as he spoke. “I have read the books of ancient times,“ he began, and all eyes turned to him. “I have read the books of ancient times, and in them the old ones spoke of wounds that bleed like slaughtered cattle, and great griefs when the living suddenly are dead, and anger that turns to blows among people. But that was long, long ago, when men were still animals, and God was young and inexperienced.”
“What does this mean, then?” asked Father. He was not a bookish man, and so even more than Lared he thought that men who knew books had answers.
“I don’t know,“ said the clerk. “But perhaps it means that God has gone away, or that he no longer cares for us.”
Lared studied the corpse of Grandma, lying on her bed. “Or is he dead?” Lared asked.
“How can God die?” the old clerk asked with withering scorn. “He had all the power in the universe.”
“Then doesn’t he have the power to die if he wants to?”
“Why should I speak with children of things like this?” The clerk got up to go upstairs, and the other travelers took that as a signal to return to bed.
But Father did not go to bed: he knelt by his old mother’s body until daybreak. And Lared also did not sleep, because he was trying to remember what he had felt inside himself yesterday that he did not feel now, for something was strange in the way his own eyes looked out upon the world, and yet he could not remember how it was before. Only Sala and Mother slept, and they slept together in Mother’s and Father’s bed.
Before dawn, Lared got up and walked over to his mother, and saw that a scab had formed on her arm, and the bleeding had stopped. Comforted, he dressed himself and went out to milk the ewe, which was near the end of its milk. Every bit of milk was needed for the cheese press and the butter churn--winter was coming, and this morning, as the cold breeze whipped at Lared’s hair, this morning he looked to winter with dread. Until today he had always looked at the future like a cow looking at the pasture, never imagining drought or snow. Now it was possible for old women to be found dead in their beds. Now it was possible for Father to be angry and knock Mother to the floor. Now it was possible for Mother to bleed like an animal. And so winter was more than just a season of inactivity. It was the end of hope.
The ewe perked up at something, a sound perhaps that Lared was too human to hear. He stopped milking and looked up, and saw in the western sky a great light, which hovered in the air like a star that had lost its bearings and needed help to get back home. Then the light sank down below the level of the trees across the river, and it was gone. Lared did not know at first what it might be. Then he remembered the word starshipfrom school and wondered. Starships did not come to Flat Harbor, or even to this continent, or even, more than once a decade, to this world. There was nothing here to carry away to somewhere else, nothing lacking here that only other worlds could possibly supply. Why, then, would a starship come here now? Don’t be a fool, Lared, he told himself. It was a shooting star, but on this strange morning you made too much of it, because you are afraid.
At dawn, Flat Harbor came awake, and others gradually made the discovery that had come to Lared’s family in the night. They came, as they always did in cold weather, to Elmo’s house, with its great table and indoor kitchen. They were not surprised to find that Elmo had not yet built up the fire in his forge.
“I scalded myself on the gruel this morning,“ said Dinno, Mother’s closest friend. She held up the smoothed skin of her fingers for admiration. “Hurts like it was still in the fire. Good God,“ she said.
Mother had her own wounds, but she chose not to tell that tale. “When that old clerk went to leave this morning, his donkey kicked him square in the belly, and now he’s upstairs. Too much hurt to travel, he says. Threw up his breakfast.”
There were a score of minor, careless injuries, and by noon most people were walking more carefully, carrying out their tasks more slowly. Not a one of them but had some injury. Omber, one of the diggers of Grandma’s grave, crushed his foot with a pick, and it bled for a long, long time; now, whi...

Card will grip your imagination and intellect
By Brian Melendez
Orson Scott Card is perhaps the greatest living science-fiction writer still writing. This book is prime evidence.
The "saga" weaves together two series of short stories that Card developed, in parallel and in tandem, over serveral years and in several incarnations. The core series concerns an interstellar human empire (loosely modeled, as Card freely acknowledges, after the First Galactic Empire in Asimov's "Foundation" series) that revolves around the drug "somec," which lets one live life a few years or a year or a day at a time, skipping over the intervening years. (The "somec" stories were originally published in earlier collections, "Capitol" and "Hot Sleep.") One's economic and social status depends on one's level of somec, which determines how quickly or slowly one moves through not only life, but history. The first "somec" story, "Skipping Stones," sets the scene: two boyhood friends take two paths, one becoming an artist who lives out his life in ordinary time, the other an entrepreneur who spaces out his life for as long as he can afford. The artist pictures himself immersed in life: "I like to swim. It gets me wet. It wears me out." But his wealthy friend dips into the world only from time to time, and the world moves on without him; when he dips back into the world, it is for him as if only a moment has passed since he last landed there, but his friend has been living a full life and the world has been living a whole history between his awakenings.
The other series concerns the "Forest of Waters," home of a community exiled from the stagnating somec-driven universe, guided at first by a godlike ancestor with paranormal psychic powers. While the somec stories are subtle parables, these other stories are much more direct inquiries into pain, suffering, and their role not only in human society but in a universe watched over by an aware deity.
Card describes this book as "the most structurally complex yet thematically unified of my works of fiction." The "thematic unity" that weaves together all the book's multifaceted stories is indeed masterful, easily surpassing Card's "The Folk of the Fringe," a masterpiece in its own right. "The Worthing Saga" is a compelling read, one that will grip your imagination and intellect long after you have finished it. I reread it every few years, and enjoy it just as much with each reacquaintance.

After the Ender series, simply not what I expected
By Phil Morgan
Well written, but jumpy (multiple story lines interestingly blended).
I liked the stories in this saga, just not overwhelmingly so. I enjoyed the Ender Wiggins sagas much more!

Killing Floor: A Jack Reacher Novel, by Lee Child

Jack Reacher visits a town without pity in the first novel in Lee Child’s New York Times bestselling series.

Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Amazon.com Review
When Jack Reacher suddenly decides to ask a Greyhound bus driver to let him off near the town of Margrave, Georgia, he thinks it's because his brother once mentioned that the famed blues guitarist Blind Blake died there. But it doesn't take long for the footloose ex-military policeman to discover that there are plenty of strange--and very dangerous--things going on behind Margrave's manicured lawns and clean streets that demand his attention. This first thriller by a former television writer features some of the best-written scenes of action in recent memory, a crash course in currency and counterfeiting, and a hero who is just begging to be called on for an encore.

From Library Journal
The transient Jack Reacher finds himself in tiny Margrave, Georgia, and is almost immediately arrested, if briefly, as a murder suspect. Imagine his surprise when he discovers that one of the victims is his brother, a brilliant U.S. Treasury agent. Reacher himself is no slouch; a former military policeman, he can dispatch villains with an astonishing array of weapons, including various parts of his body. In the company of a straight-arrow detective and a beautiful lady cop, Reacher soon unearths a conspiracy stretching through the little town and beyond. Blood flows freely, terrible threats are made and carried out, and body parts accumulate. First novelist Child, a former television writer, stretches coincidence outrageously in this would-be noir outing, whose hero is creepily amoral, violent, and generally unpleasant. Only large pop fiction collections need consider.?Elsa Pendleton, Boeing Information Svcs., Ridgecrest, Cal.

From Kirkus Reviews
Welcome to Margrave, Georgia--but don't get too attached to the townsfolk, who are either in on a giant conspiracy, or hurtling toward violent deaths, or both. There's not much of a welcome for Jack Reacher, a casualty of the Army's peace dividend, who's drifted into town idly looking for traces of a long-dead black jazzman. Not only do the local cops arrest him for murder, but the chief of police turns eyewitness to place him on the scene, even though Reacher was getting on a bus in Tampa at the time. Two surprises follow: The murdered man wasn't the only victim, and he was Reacher's brother Joe, whom he hadn't seen in seven years. So Reacher, who so far hasn't had anything personally against the crooks who set him up for a weekend in the state pen at Warburton, clicks into overdrive. Banking on the help of the only two people in Margrave he can trust--a Harvard-educated chief of detectives who hasn't been on the job long enough to be on the take, and a smart, scrappy officer who's taken him to her bed--he sets out methodically in his brother's footsteps, trying to figure out why his cellmate in Warburton, a panicky banker whose cell-phone number turned up in Joe's shoe, confessed to a murder he obviously didn't commit; trying to figure out why all the out-of- towners on Joe's list of recent contacts were as dead as he was; and trying to stop the local carnage, or at least direct it in more positive ways. Though the testosterone flows as freely as printer's ink, Reacher is an unobtrusively sharp detective in his quieter moments--not that there are many of them to judge by. Despite the crude, tough-naif narration, debut novelist Child serves up a big, rangy plot, menace as palpable as a ticking bomb, and enough battered corpses to make an undertaker grin. Some minor quirks but a rousing good read.
By Naomi Johnson
I'm new to the Jack Reacher series but I have to say that I enjoyed this first book. I was interested in reading what other reviewers had to say: Author was charged with using the word "shrugged" too much. I never noticed, I was busy turning the pages I guess. Author was charged with using short, choppy sentences. Is that a literary offense? Because if it is, it's time to take Hemingway's work out and burn it, he having been critically lauded for years for that short, choppy style which is supposed to be very manly -- in a literary sense, I suppose. All I know is that I find old Hem's work mindnumbingly dull. At least Mr. Child keeps me awake, those choppy sentences lend a sense of urgency to the story. (Just like Earl Emerson's short chapters in 'Pyro'!) Author is charged with not being an expert on America. Neither am I and I've spent 48 out of 50 years here. Oh, and one review bemoaned the fact that somehow the author failed to realize the US has no Marines stationed in Europe, that we have no naval base there. Hm, I don't keep up with the exact locations of all US bases but I spent two years at Zaragoza Air Base, Spain, and when I was there, the US had a naval base at Rota. Author is charged with having a written a very violent book. Well. There you have me. It IS violent. If violence disturbs you, what the heck are you doing reading books in this genre in the first place? There was a great honking picture of a bloody handprint on the cover of the paperback I bought -- I would have thought that was a (you'll excuse the pun) dead giveaway as to the nature of this book. Oh, almost forgot. The author is also charged with too much coincidence in the brother/killing plot point. Stranger things happen every day -- gee, Bush got elected twice. I think THAT's stretching coincidence!

Yes, Jack Reacher is an anti-hero. Yes, the books has some flaws (as most every book I've ever read does). But I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to seeing Reacher's character progression in the next book. Do I think he's the next Lucas Davenport? Nope, not unless he gets a stronger sense of humor and a lot more sexy. But Reacher is verrrry interesting!

OK, I'm done defending the book. Now, here's the bit that bothered me: A top gun in the Treasury Dept drops out of sight and the Feds don't swarm all over looking for him when his prints come across the computer? A second Treasury Dept worker is brutally murdered in an airport and (1) it's the busy airport at Atlanta and no one sees it??? and (2) the Feds don't follow up on this either? Still -- I was able to suspend my disbelief long enough to overlook these things, just because I wanted to see what Jack would do next.

Jack Reacher can have my number !
By Suzanne Vitale
I started with "Running Blind," Lee Child's third book, and finished it off in record time to jump back online to see what else Lee Child had written. The hero, Jack Reacher, was a military brat growing up, a military career man until the army downsized, and then became a drifter by choice. He's a one-man swat team correcting injustice as it finds him. In "Killing Floor" he just happens to get off the bus near the intersection of a small town in Georgia and after wandering on foot into the town of Margrave he is immediately arrested for a brutal murder which he obviously did not commit. He digs his way through several mysteries at one time including the identity of the murdered man. The suspense never lets up; there is a girl (a cop) that he loves but leaves with good romance and dialogue throughout. The only problem I had with the hero is that he arrives without any luggage and only occasionaly needs to buy a new outfit of clothes as he thows away what he has on at the time. He gives new meaning to traveling light. I'm going to quit writing now and start reading the next book..."Die Trying" I hope to see more of Jack Reacher after I have caught up with the next two.

What a Book!
By Michael Butts
Wow, what a book! Lee Child has given us perhaps the most interesting and complex hero in some time. Jack Reacher is Clint Eastwood, John Wayne and Arnold Schwarzenegger rolled into one...but with much more personality and pizzazz! I'm only sorry it's taken me so long to read Mr. Child's book!
The story is a riveting one, focusing on Jack's involvement in a crime in a small town in Georgia. Boy, does he make a mistake in deciding to stop off in this little burg, just to find out about a blue singing legend named Blind Blake. But, what a story unfolds. The dialogue is brisk, economical, and very involving! Along with Jack, there are a ton of characters that are so remarkably fleshed out and described, you would think this was a true crime story!
There are scenes of nail-biting action; very graphic and disturbing scenes of violence; and amidst all this some really well-written scenes of sensitivity and poignancy. Jack's meeting with an old lady who once knew the old blues legend is outstanding in its emotional punch! Paul Hubble, the neurotic banker; Roscoe, the beautiful policewoman; Finlay, the chief of detectives; and the evil villains are some of the best written characters in recent mystery fiction.
What is so amazing about this book is the way Lee Child has not only woven a complex murder mystery, but also a chilling tale of greed, madness, and lost loves and lives.
This is an emotional, wrenching debut, and I cannot wait to start in on the rest of this series!
An outstanding piece of fiction!
