mostly good, and glad that I could get it quick ...

I bought this because it was the only hymnal available on prime. I was making gifts for grandmothers. I tried to find songs that we all knew. I was familiar with maybe 1/3 of them (I grew up Assemblies of God, Penticostal), and I've been raised in church. It doesn't have some of the old hymns from my childhood, but it has most of them. So, mostly good, and glad that I could get it quick from Prime!

The celebration hymnal is a great resource for someone involved in the music ministry at church. The hymnal is full of the most popular Christain songs, both traditional and contempory. It is fully equipped with arrangements, intros, choral endings and more, making it perfect for choirs and special numbers. It is easy to make a song sound professional - without the work because the format makes it easy to sing. It is a classic that I'll use for years to come.

Also purchased for a relative, the elation from the authenticity of this book was well worth it. Excellent condition and exactly what we were looking for. If you are looking for items for a relative or family member that may enjoy collecting or reminiscing about different times this is a great find!

it's very good

This book is used for the undergraduate and graduate courses is seismic analysis.

Some of the chapter sections on the more advanced topics are a bit hard to understand (sometimes there's a few steps in math skipped), but mostly it's b/c the topics are not that easy to explain on paper. I'm not a big fan of response spectra myself. It also probably doesn't help that we'd skip segments. I'm sure if you read the book end-to-end, that would make it a bit more understandable. Understand that some of the seismic topics aren't going to be interesting to the common layman unless you are really passionate about analysis.

Overall though, Prof. Chopra does a wonderful job of walking a person through single degree, then multiple degree of freedom systems and how to apply matrix algebra and differential equations to the solutions of basic problems.

It's not one of my favorite books. It's good, but not an especially favorite topic, personally.

Plus I have to give this book an outstanding review b/c Prof. Chopra was the one of the only professors who genuinely cared about his students back in those times at U.C. Berkeley. He always made time for his students and was a joy to just sit and chat with. Alot of effort was put into making this book, and was time well spent.

Great Book

I worked as a software architect for many years before I have joined the "Dark Side".
We had to deal with many aspects and problems of SOA and WCF services. Microsoft seems to put an end to this misery with a more lightweight API now. Hope we had such books and resources then. Late developments with Javascript APIs and Web Browsers allow you to use JSON more effectively with large web projects. Also small, low-powered devices are largely targeted when building new software projects. Those make Microsoft's Web API, one of the most important tools in programmers' arsenal.

First thing I do when I read a book like this, I take my time and create every project and code in it manually. (not copy-paste it from the examples) This makes me understand the principles and practice together.

What I like about this book is;
- They gave a background about every aspect before they dive into details. I had a chance to reorganize my knowledge.
- Especially I liked the chapter which Microsoft's Task Based Asynchronous Pattern explained. The examples were sufficient easy to understand.
- The code examples are authentic. Not gathered from blogs and books that I've already read.
- If you are careful there are a lot of small solutions to daily problems in between lines and examples. (IIS configurations for better concurrency etc.)
- They used Fiddler's output in the book. Which is important because when you develop a project using Web API you have to use it a lot.
- But most important, the book is not boring and monotonous.

Even it looks lightweight and simpler than SOAP, Web API concepts is needed some background to know why we are doing what we are doing. I know how hard it is to get newbie programmers to consume these concepts and this book have done it well.

Off the beaten track.

I have to give the author an "A" for a great writing style. However the author seems to have gotten confused between writing a book on Microsoft’s Web API and developing his own wrapper class which obfuscates the purpose of the trying to understand Microsoft's Web API. Having had a massive bout or two of DLL hell to sort out with the command line package manger which was very enlightening. The author’s intention was clear but from a teaching standpoint this book hurt. Yes I did get all the examples to run and feel the DLL hell experience was useful. It would have been nice had the author not got side tracked with his own wrapper API and used the Web API directly and cleanly as possible.

Excellent Content, Poor Quality Control

The content of this book is well written, the examples are clear and concise, and this book is an excellent resource.

However, it was poorly manufactured -- several pages in my copy of the book were not bound correctly, and so it ends up being a book with several loose leaf pages interspersed in it. So don't drop it, else the pages might go flying...

Reading while on the throne. . . and the thoughts that come

Awesome book. Every household with a bathroom where there's a reader who visits... Well, this is a perfect book to add to your decor, an item to be used when paying a visit to the WC. A friend of mine loaned this book to me back when it was first published. Julie L. Horan was a flight attendant who flew all over the world. Of course, where ever she went, there were toilets there to use. Thus, began her curiosity. Book is full of interesting tidbits about this place and that, times being the ancient and the modern.

"Porcelain God" has lots of minute details that you'll really want to know about one of our most frequently used tools. Without the toilet in the house, our backyards would be quite unsightly and unsanitary. In fact, I've always wondered how one can be allowed to build something without a toilet, a sewer and a way for it to be composted... Well, thus, we have nuclear power plants, but then that's another whole tale, did you get it? No storage for the waste... Back to the "The Porcelain God: A Social History of the Toilet".

Believe me, if you've never been curious about how we got toilets, then you're not really a deep thinker. This book has all the answers to your questions, presented in an entertaining fashion and told by a woman who just couldn't seem to get enough information about her subject.

Here's one thing that book did to me: It made me begin to shut the lid on my toilet after every use. I tell people it's because in an earthquake I don't want all the items above the toilet on a shelf to fall into the tank, actually true. If things come back to life after the quake, the last thing you want to be doing is shopping for a toilet with everyone else. No, it's the info she gives you about how high the water rises up above and how long that continues after you've flushed the toilet. Not something I'd ever pondered before her book.

The two plus two equals four here is: If you allow the water spray from the toilet to come back into your room, then how sanitary is the air in your bathroom? Hmmm... something to ponder... deeply... Yes, I'll recommend this book to every one. In fact, I just purchased a copy of this book for a family member who I know is about to do some travels. Thought it would be a good time to begin learning about the toilets of the world... and what the water spray really means to them.

I meant to mention that this book is one of my favorite history books. The writer has a clear style with humorous overtones ~ after all, look at her chosen subject. She takes you all over the world and all through the ages in an entertaining fashion. So, if you're looking for a good read with real facts presented in an easy to read format, here's a book you should not pass up.

Disappointing

My roommates and I bought this book together looking for a comprehensive overview of each specialty-- typical practice settings, level of competitiveness (for residency spots, fellowship spots, and beyond), income, and future prospects/directions for each field. We wanted numbers with an objective interpretation. We couldn't find such information anywhere else, and, unfortunately, we didn't find it here either.
This book is a hodgepodge of trite quotes and whatever the author found during a 15-minute search on Medline-- I know because I tried it myself, and I got the same handful of articles that she cites. The information she presents is often outdated or taken out of context, and is generally too vague and/or superficial to be of use in any case.
I cannot imagine how anyone other than the author herself would rate this book highly. Save your money.
I wish I could recommend some more useful resource, but I still haven't found it.

A must-have to every medical student !

Most medical students are hesitant to choose their medical specialty. No book until now has solved this dilemma in a proper way except this one! I was asking myself this question before graduation, and I saw this book at the Toronto Bookstore 2 years ago, but didn't want to buy it cuz one of my friends told me that there were many web sites which will help you choose your future specialty. Unfortunately, I didn't find a comprehensive book or at an article or a website about that. Then after graduation, I had the chance to visit Toronto Bookstore again and decided this time to buy it!

Very Important Decision - Choosing a Medical Specialty

The medical education system in the United States "tracks" medical students from the moment they sign on the dotted line for residency; therefore, this is the most crucial juncture in the career of a physician.

As an occupational physician and having been involved with impaired physicians--those doctors and surgeons that abuse substances, have neurological and/or psychiatric illness, and other problems that impair their ability to practice--carefully choosing a "calling" can have a profound impact on the life of the physician! Multiple studies have shown that enjoying one's vocation protects against a myriad of illnesses, e.g. substance abuse, heart disease, dementia, diabetes, and many others.

To this end Anita Taylor's book "How to Choose a Medical Specialty" is the most thorough insofar as Ms Taylor is an educator and does not bring any biases into which career path the reader should choose. All other comparable books like Iserson's or Freeman's skip or give short-shrift to the fundamental assumption of "Do you really want to be an X?..." Other commentators note that Ms Taylor's data discriminators are psychosocial, e.g. "time off", "pay attention to details", "be optimistic", and yet time-and-time again psychosocial factors are far more reliable as predictors to whether a worker will enjoy their vocation.

For REAL DATA on the specialties go to the source! I suggest the website of the American Board of Medical Specialties and the AMA GME Green Book. The Green Book is a little dense but it contains ALL THE RULES on what it takes to become a Board Certified X.

Also, remember that only the common specialties are going to receive attention. I very rarely see Occupational Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Public Health, Medical Genetics, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Nuclear Medicine, or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation reviewed. You might just like one of these specialties if you had only known about them before you got **trapped in a specialty that conflicts with your personality**. Remember, once you go into a specialty via a residency you must do ANOTHER RESIDENCY to change and get Board Certified in another specialty... OUCH! Try doing this at age 45 with kids! This is one reason some physicians have substance abuse and/or marital problems.

Finally, think carefully about what are the **essential functions** of the specialty you choose. Do you need color vision to be a Pathologist? Generally, YES... a Pathologist looks at COLORED SLIDES under a microscope. I have had to tell a Pathologist that this is a problem! Do you need depth perception to be a Surgeon? Hmmm... YES (just try cutting with one eye shut). Believe it or not many physicians go into specialties where they would have difficulty performing the essential functions of the specialty from the very beginning.

Using computer technology to store, change, and manufacture sounds and pictures -- digital signal processing -- is one of the most significant achievements of the late twentieth century. This book is an informal, and I hope friendly, introduction to the field, emphasizing digital audio and applications to computer music. It will tell you how DSP works, how to use it, and what the intuition is behind its basic ideas. By keeping the mathematics simple and selecting topics carefully, I hope to reach a broad audience, including:

beginning students of signal processing in engineering and computer science courses; composers of computer music and others who work with digital sound; World Wide Web and internet practitioners, who will be needing DSP more and more for multimedia applications; general readers with a background in science who want an introduction to the key ideas of modern digital signal processing. We'll start with sine waves. They are found everywhere in our world and for a good reason: they arise in the very simplest vibrating physical systems. We'll see, in Chapter 1, that a sine wave can be viewed as a phasor, a point moving in a circle. This representation is used throughout the book, and makes it much easier to understand the frequency response of digital filters, aliasing, and other important frequency-domain concepts. In the second chapter we'll see how sine waves also arise very naturally in more complicated systems -- vibrating strings and organ pipes, for example -- governed by the fundamental wave equation. This leads to the cornerstone of signal processing: the idea that all signals can be expressed as sums of sine waves. From there we take up sampling and the simplest digital filters, then continue to Fourier series, the FFT algorithm, practical spectrum measurement, the z-transform, and the basics of the most useful digital filter design algorithms. The final chapter is a tour of some important applications, including the CD player, FM synthesis, and the phase vocoder. At several points I return to ideas to develop them more fully. For example, the important problem of aliasing is treated first in Chapter 3, then in greater depth in Chapter 11. Similarly, digital filtering is reexamined several times with increasing sophistication. This is why you should read this book from the beginning to the end. Not all books are meant to be read that way, but this one definitely is. Some comments about mechanics: All references to figures and equations refer to the current chapter unless stated otherwise. Absolutely fundamental results are enclosed in boxes. Each chapter ends with a Notes section, which includes historical comments and references to more advanced books and papers, and a set of problems. Read the problems over, even if you don't work them the first time around. They aren't drill exercises, but instead mention generalizations, improvements, and wrinkles you will encounter in practice or in more advanced work. A few problems suggest computer experiments. If you have access to a practical signal-processing laboratory, use it. Hearing is believing. Many people helped me with this book. Accessible DSP Text geared for those interested in audio

This is a different kind of digital signal processing textbook in just about every way. To begin with, chapter one starts out talking about sinusoids in the context of tuning forks, when just about every other DSP book under the sun starts with a review of linear systems. This is good, in that throughout the book your eye is kept on the ball of actual audio applications. This can be somewhat troublesome in that the author sometimes has to delve into mathematics that the typical DSP student may not be ready for - the wave equation and elementary partial differential equations for example. The author ultimately does get the job done, however, explaining the DFT, FFT, z-transform, and filter design all within the context of audio signals. It is true that only the last chapter is explicitly labeled "Audio and Musical Applications". However, this only means that the author is discussing complex applications in this chapter only, after the groundwork has been laid for all of the theory. I would especially recommend this book to people interested in computer music that need to get up to speed on DSP. Such students may also appreciate "DSP Filter Cookbook" by John Lane. It is all about the implementation of audio filters and contains C++ source code and schematics. If you are a traditional student of DSP and digital audio does not interest you, you might want to go a more traditional route starting out with "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" by Lyon and proceeding on to a more advanced text such as "Discrete Time Signal Processing" by Oppenheimer or "Digital Signal Processing: Principles, Algorithms and Applications" by Proakis.

great so far!

This book is nicely written. The author takes a step-by-step approach, building up the knowledge level of the reader slowly and clearly, so that later parts of the book are easier understood. I have only read the first couple chapters, but am happy so far. I never clearly understood some of the basic DSP concepts because they tended to be taught in college by professors who were either in a rush, or didn't fully understand how to teach the basics. I'm not going to say that the book makes it super simple - the fact is DSP requires a good handle on calculus and trig, but assuming the reader is willing to stop and think a while as to what is being said and what the math means, it's approached in an intuitive manner. The only thing I found myself wanting was an answer sheet for the questions at the end of the chapter. It would be nice to have a few problems worked out so I can get a deeper intuition for how to approach problems beyond the theory, but then again, I'm only in the second chapter.

great DSP introduction, focus on computer music

This is the only DSP book I would recommend for a beginner. This is an especially great book for someone without an EE background who doesn't know much about signals, or someone who doesn't know/care about analog filters. I found the book quite practical, and was able to implement working digital filters after reading it. But, it also gave me a good understanding of the theory.

I've gotten other DSP books since then, including the famed Oppenheim, and I've been rather disappointed with each of them. The book is a lot more readable and less abstract than the others.

I do wish this book covered more topics.. Some more specifics about Butterworth and Chebyshev filters would have been nice. If you just want sample code for building a filter, you won't get it.

However, this book covers some topics which I haven't seen covered well elsewhere, like comb filters, resonators, reverb, and digital simulation of a plucked string. So it's still worth getting even if you already know about DSP and have other books.
