Miss Manners combines wit and heavy information to make a winning solution and a book that you can't put down. (Unless you have company of course, not putting it down could result in an ettiquette faux-pas!) A marvelous writer, this book should be read by all. Maybe then then world could operate in a more gracious manner.

From birth until death (literally), Miss Manners has advice for every step of the way. From birth ("It is considerate if the baby sleeps in a way so that the visitors can see his face.") to marriage ("Brides who ramble on about 'the happiest day' do not really realize what they are talking about.") to death ("If your crochety old great uncle died and left you a fortune, you are supposed to look solemn, if not actually grieved.")

Nothing is left untouched. An 8-year-old's problems with eating asparagus (correctly), how to address wedding invitations, and the adventures of the Perfect family grace Miss Manners' charm and wit in a wonderfully engaging way

At Long Last

In my senior year of high school, I came across this book in the library and found that I couldn't put it down. The current librarian was retiring at the end of the year, and I had begged and pleaded with her to let me purchase the book. She told me how she was a Southern Belle in her youth, and how she and her friends were instructed to read it to learn proper etiquette. She smiled at me and said I could not buy the book from the library; and I was certain at that moment that I would never come across the book again (as it is out of print). When passing by the wedding planning section this week at the Barnes & Noble, I instantly remembered Miss Manners and looked for the book which I had so desperately wanted to read again. The Barnes & Noble, of course, did not carry it; but undeterred, I ran to my laptop as soon as I came home and searched for it here on Amazon. Within a few short days---I was not expecting it until next week) I received the package in the mail. Enclosed politely within the pages was a short and sweet little note asking that I leave feedback and promising accommodation should there be any complications; and so I thought I would share this little anecdote. The book is without question delightfully funny and an absolute must-read, for anyone inquiring assistance in the realm of etiquette; but the seller is also by far the most well-mannered I have come across on this site. The book is in wonderful condition and I would love to do business again. Thank you~

Good book

This is a good book to reinforce graphing skills. There are graphs for different skill levels: basic pictures for beginning graphers, and more complicated ones for intermediate graphers. Two main reasons why this book does not score five stars:

1. If mistakes are made, it is very difficult for a student to pinpoint what went wrong. It is quite common to either connect the dots out of order, or miss the negative sign in some of the coordinates. Students end up with a mess if they're not careful.

2. These graphs reinforce "connecting the dots," which is NOT how coordinates are used in math. Students must be told that these are fun activities; they are only connecting the coordinates to make a picture.

I teach math to 6th graders and my students loved doing these graphing pictures as an end of the unit activity. They become very adept at predicting into which quadrant each coordinate pair would fall.

Beautiful photos but poor instructions

Not quite what I expected. Beautiful photos but poor instructions. I will be able to make some clothing because I am a very experienced sewist. But my students who want to use these patterns will need a ton of guidance. The designs are not as interesting either as the book preview suggests.

Don't order e-reader version of book

I just finished reading and have decided which design to start sewing. However, I purchased the kindle version which appears to me to have been a mistake. I am unable to download the patterns - hence the book is kind of worthless without the patterns. I think Amazon and the publisher should ensure patterns are printable before offering an e-reader version of a publication.

Wonderful edgy clothing. These patterns seem more complex than other japanese pattern books so I haven't yet attempted any. But I can read this book over and over because it's so beautiful!

About the Author
Thomas J. Cutler is a retired lieutenant commander and former gunner's mate second class who served in patrol craft, cruisers, destroyers, and aircraft carriers. His varied assignments included an in-country Vietnam tour, small craft command, and nine years at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he served as Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Seamanship & Navigation Department and Associate Chairman of the History Department. While at the Academy, he was awarded the William P. Clements Award for Excellence in Education (military teacher of the year).

He is the founder and former Director of the Walbrook Maritime Academy in Baltimore. Currently he is Fleet Professor of Strategy and Policy with the Naval War College and is the Director of Professional Publishing at the U.S. Naval Institute.

Winner of the Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Naval Literature, the U.S. Naval Institute Press Author of the Year, and the U.S. Maritime Literature Award, his published works include NavCivGuide: A Handbook for Civilians in the U.S. Navy; A Sailor's History of the U.S. Navy [one of the books in the Chief of Naval Operations Reading Program]; The Battle of Leyte Gulf; Brown Water, Black Berets: Coastal & Riverine Warfare in Vietnam; and the 22nd, 23rd (Centennial), and 24th editions of The Bluejacket's Manual. His other works include revisions of Jack Sweetman's The Illustrated History of the U.S. Naval Academy and Dutton's Nautical Navigation. He and his wife, Deborah W. Cutler, are the co-editors of the Dictionary of Naval Terms and the Dictionary of Naval Abbreviations.

His books have been published in various forms, including paperback and audio, and have appeared as main and alternate selections of the History Book Club, Military Book Club, and Book of the Month Club. He has served as a panelist, commentator, and keynote speaker on military and writing topics at many events and for various organizations, including the Naval History and Heritage Command, Smithsonian Institution, the Navy Memorial, U.S. Naval Academy, MacArthur Memorial Foundation, Johns Hopkins University, U.S. Naval Institute, Armed Forces Electronics Communications and Electronics Association, Naval War College, Civitan, and many veterans' organizations. His television appearances include the History Channel's Biography series, A&E's Our Century, Fox News Channel's The O'Reilly Factor, and CBS's 48 Hours.

I received my first Bluejacket's Manual in November, 1943. It was the 11th Edition.
The occasion was my entry into boot camp at the very large recruit training center in San Diego. The size of the Navy during WWII was nothing short of awesome. In 1945 there were over 3.4 million wearing Navy blue!
The BJM served me well during my World War II tour as a Pharmacist's Mate.
After four years, my enlistment expired in October, 1947. Discharged as a Pharmacist's Mate 2nd class, E-5 in today's jargon. I then spent 5 years in the Naval Reserve. My rating was changed in 1948 to Hospital Corpsman Second Class, HM2.
As Pharmacist's Mates we had always been referred to as "hospital corpsmen" and we were graduates of "Hospital Corps School" so nothing really changed. I still have my certificate of graduation from "Corps School" in San Diego, dated March, 1944. I had just turned 19 years old.
About 10 years ago I bought a 22nd edition of the BJM at the local Naval Air Station, Joint Reserve Base, here in Fort Worth, Texas.
I'll always love the U.S. Navy and will enjoy looking through the 24th edition as I celebrate my 85th birthday March 15th.

You need this.

This is a MUST HAVE if you're going to join the Navy. It covers everything you could possibly think about in regards to the Navy, and it's customs and protocols. LEARN RANK AND RATE RECOGNITION. It will help you out a lot, especially as a new recruit, when you're able to correctly greet someone as "YN1" instead of just "petty officer".

Going to boot camp...

I got this because I was in DEP for the Navy and I wanted to be as prepared for boot camp as possible. Ultimately Bootcamp uses their own training guide for the first 7 weeks then you get a chance to read this manual, and this is more specific to the fleet. I feel I knew more going in than anyone else because I read this before I shipped out. I read it again at bootcamp (Everyone is issued one) and everything made more sense. If you want to know about the USN, how simple things like painting (lay on, lay off) to historic battles and communicating with flag, this book covers a TON of stuff with out the bull crap in other books. straight forward book.

Melanie Bowles is Senior Lecturer in Digital Textiles Design at Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts, London, with more than 15 years' teaching experience. She is also a textile designer and researcher and has sold and exhibited her work internationally.

Ceri Isaac is a textile designer specializing in digital print and technology. She has over 10 years of industry experience and her work has been exhibited at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York and the Textile Design Museum in Washington, D.C. She is based in London.

It was okay for begginers

I ordered this book for a class on textile design. It is fairly well organized but the majority of the class did get confused a couple of times because of missing steps.
I had already had a class using Illustrator and Photoshop so I was able to skip a lot or I knew a more efficient way to do many of the lessons.
I recommend this book for beginners, but not for experienced Adobe users.

Great reference for digital textiles

Nice reference book if you are interested in digital textile. Contains tutorials about pattern design, repeats and special textile effects. Also has designer profiles with works samples. Even though tutorials were written for Illustrator and Photoshop software (I have CorelDraw), I was able to get some great info about creating patterns.

I chose this book becouse I needed to find information about the process of digital textile printing, and buying this book turned into a great decision becouse it explain ancient technics and it has a very detailed explanation about digital printing.

Steven Bingen is a historian, screenwriter, and former archivist at Warner Bros. Originally a native of Seattle, Bingen has written and contributed to dozens of books, articles, and documentaries on Hollywood history. He coauthored MGM: Hollywood’s Greatest Backlot, the first significant book ever published about a movie studio lot. He lives in the world’s largest backlot, also known as Los Angeles.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. The photos, and other images, are crystal clear and the text is very informative. Not as comprehensive as the "MGM Backlot" book, (what is!) but in its own way, an equal. A great addition to my film book library.

PRICELESS WB STUDIO HISTORY

Steven Bingen who co-wrote the highly praised and exhaustive study MGM: HOLLYWOOD'S GREATEST BACKLOT a few years ago has come up with another superb studio history. This one is done in quite a different design than the previous volume but that doesn't inhibit any of the invaluable information and archival photos that make this publication a significant addition to film history. Warner Bros. and in particular its Burbank headquarters has always been one of the iconic studios but most of us mainly remember it from those awe inspiring aerial shots of the WB production plant when the company was introducing its famous television shows back in the early sixties. Now with this book we get a chance to venture into the studio and learn all about "Hollywood's Ultimate Backlot". An added bonus is the listing (as complete as possible) of the backlot locations where the various WB films and television programs were shot. A wonderful read of fascinating film and social history, loaded with priceless photos and maps.
Hopefully the author has got his sights on more studio histories e.g. Universal City, Paramount and 20th. Century Fox.

The Last Great Backlot History!

Having had a chance to tour the lot in the late 70's because my relative leased editing equipment to the major studios I was fascinated with the history of it all. It is truly the last true movie back lot left. MGM's was sold off during the start of the Kerkorian reign (what a loss) and Twentieth Century Fox's was lost. So much cinematic history remains at Warner's lot. If you are a big movie buff this book is just a treasure trove of interesting facts and photos.

About the Author
Carleton Varney grew up in Nahant, Massachusetts. After Varney graduated from Oberlin College, his studies took him to the University of Madrid and Europe. Upon returning to New York in 1962, he earned a Master's Degree in Education from New York University and later joined the decorating firm of Dorothy Draper and Company, Inc. Varney writes a regular syndicated column that appears in the 'Palm Beach Daily News'. He has published twenty-seven books on decorating including his latest, 'Mr. Color',penned two novels, and written the official biography of Dorothy Draper. He has just released his first CD, 'Music with Style', for Rick Dees Entertainment.

As History & Biography: Bravo! As Design Inspiration: Blah!

I bought this book for my wife, who is an artist and color consultant, because I thought she'd enjoy seeing an iconic designer known for her bold use of color and thematic environments -- especially done on a grand scale. And, yes, you will find page after page after page of grand ballrooms, hotel lobbies, mansion-size dining rooms, and so on here.

80% of them, unfortunately, are photographed in black & white. So much for the bold use of color.

There are two great color photos -- pages 161 and 207 -- that show off Draper's lush, vibrant style. But the rest of the book is either slightly out of focus color photos, color illustrations and old ads, or black & white photos. It's just sad in how it under-represents Dorothy Draper.

"But be fair," you say. "Dorothy Draper's peak took place before the advent of color photography." That's fine. But this book is a perfect example of the rare publishing project that truly is BEGGING for Photoshop colorization. On page 53, for example, the text refers to a House & Garden magazine article which declared one of Draper's most visible design projects, Hampshire House, to be "a gold mine of decorating ideas, particularly in color." And yet all four photos on that spread are in black & white, as are the spreads before and after it. A very good Photoshop artist -- and several do perfect, true-to-life work -- could give those old black & white shots the vivid, vibrant colors that would represent Dorothy Draper properly and accurately without changing Draper's style one iota.

As I say in my title, as a history (of the advent of superstar designers) and a biography (of Draper), this is a very good book that should not be overlooked. But how can you do a history of bold interior design, or a biography of a top interior designer, without SHOWING the vivacious use of color which was central to both? That's like doing a bio of Abe Lincoln without including the Gettysburg Address.

So is this worth seeing? Definitely. Worth buying used? Probably. Worth buying new? Only if you're rich.

Outside of book is beautifull,inside a bit dissapointing.

The book is very well made and the photography is good given the age of the photos available. But it is mainly about hotels,lobbies and so on. I would like to have seen more houses of individual clients as well and more rooms done by Carleton Varney of a recent date. I think we will have to wait for a book about Carleton Varney himself to see the "Draper" touch in this century.

Disappointing

As an avid fan of Dorothy Draper style, I found the quality of the photography, and the lack of color photos, frustrating. In this digital age, it would have been interesting, and possible, to view the b/w photos alongside a digitally colored version to get the real impact of these beautiful rooms. A few glossy pages would have also helped. Happy to have this book in my collection, but unlikely it will be viewed as frequently and lovingly as Kelly Wearstler's books.
