Like many people, I've had a fascination and curiosity about the mafia and what fuels it today. This book, however, really helped me put together the history of the mafia in what was essentially a coffee table book that nails down the background, beginnings, and big players in this legendary crime powerhouse. What I especially liked about this book was the organized way that Gasparini broke down the history. In the book, he takes us back to the foundation in Sicily, Italy and what the mafia meant in the beginning. Since I had often heard ex-mafia family members say on television that it was an organization that was created to "take care of ones own," especially here in the United States, I always thought it had some creepy, honor code behind it. What I found through this book, however, was that it really was motivated by thug mentality that hid behind a code of honor. Originally, it was a band of men who grouped together to basically tax all the landowners and workers in their area. When people were too poor or resisted their brute ways, they sliced their faces and terrorized their families to make a point to everyone that this is what would happen if they resisted their control. Needless to say, the history and reports over the last century have blown my mind. The number of retaliations, murders, and criminal activities are shocking to me.

Gasparini really helped to put a human face to the victims. In the book, he showed news clippings and pictures of people the mafia held as ransom (one a little boy that they kidnapped to prevent his father who was in prison from ratting them out, who they later murdered) or were caught in the crossfires of grudge matches. I can't even imagine what judge or police officer would dare go against these men, especially when so many of them were murdered along the way. It was all pretty nauseating and frightening. To be honest, the one thing the book leaves open is how the mafia can be stopped. From the way the book lays out their history, their power seems endless. Yes, they have captured and put away hundreds of powerful players and their pawns, but the system is very much still in place. It's all very frightening.

If you're at all interested in learning some of the history of the mafia, but don't want to read a 400 page break down, this is a great place to turn. Although it seems like a giant coffee table-like book, there is plenty of history and information to help fill you in. I highly recommend it and think it is a great way into what I'm now realizing is a pretty convoluted history.

Lisa and her co-authors have compiled a fantastic resource guide that is not only beautifully designed but also puts everything you need right at your finger tips -- with fast passes, checklists, tips, and guidelines for every step of your design journey. Their double-loop landscape lays out the entire process to follow to build your team, establish your point of view, understand your customer's world, ideate, prototype and then scale and validate your ideas. Great work, exceeded my expectations, w/ some room for improvement

It should come as no surprise that the DBB book is very well designed and presented. It's beautiful. But just like Branding itself, there has to be some substantial defendable underlying value first, only then does a great branding performs very well.

I doubt that I represent the intended customer since I develop strategy tools myself and purchased the DBB book for research purposes. I started reading the book and was prepared to be overwhelmed with tons of tools that will add noise instead of clarity... a typical magazine reading experience. I was totally wrong!

The book was surprisingly well balanced not overwhelming. I am an advocate of visuals especially when they add value by simplifying, explaining, and drawing the eyes attention... but maybe it was a tad more distracting that it should've been in some instances. The value of the visuals while explaining the tools, process, concepts, & interviews were spot on, but less so with the whiteboard doodle explainer style. That only makes sense to me in video format. the flow and substance were commendable though.

Overall, a great manual and process that points to great tools, just I would recommend using those you need only in order to avoid being overwhelmed. The only thing this book lacks is a better marketing of its original work, the footers indicate that some of the tools were created by the authors. These original works should be celebrated more prominently. Overall, great job!

Synthia Andrews has been a message and bodywork therapist for 25 years. She is an authorized teacher of Jin Shin Do Bodymind Acupressure, has been on faculty at the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy for 16 years, and was a four-year faculty member at the Kripalu Yoga Institute. She is licensed in the state of Connecticut, where she maintains a private practice, and is currently a forth-year student of Naturopathic Medicine at the University of Bridgeport. Siendo de Chopra, tenia altas expectativas de este libro. Ademas, primero lei "Jesus" y me gusto mucho, queria leerme la trilogia completa, pero despues de leer "Buda" yo no estoy tan seguro.... Es una novela de ficcion amena, facil de leer y con el hipnotismo de todas las novelas de Chopra.

Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions

I am new to collecting books. So when I purchased this book after reading wonderful reviews, as a beginner I had to have it! The book boasts listing 1000's of publisher's names and their specific designations how to tell if I am looking at a 1st edition of their printing. Before I sound negative, let me say, yes. The book can be invaluable when used correctly at spotting a 1st edition if it isn't overly difficult to begin with.

For me, the first 3-books I picked up and tried using my pocket guide; The publishers weren't even listed in the book! I mean, Go Figure, right? The guide gives you a very brief description of what a publisher's 1st edition should have to indicate if they are in fact a 1st, but I find sometimes you need more detailed information. I understand it is a pocket guide, and maybe it's great for an expert who only needs 1 or 2 indications to recognize a "True 1st Edition" but for this bone-a-fied novice, sometimes I need a little more.
That being said; I recommend this book, and I use my copy whenever I'm out book hunting. If you are like me and are just starting out? It is a must have tool until someone publishes another pocket guide with more descriptions to the affect; i.e. "later editions will have this, or will not have this, get it?

Great First Edition Book Resource in your Pocket. Now updated

There is nothing more aggravating to a book collector to find out that the First Edition they bought is in fact not a First Edition. Various publishers pay varying degrees of attention to identification of their First Editions and some are very laid back about it.

As there is no Industry Standard (hint, hint, BIG hint to Publishers) each has chosen different methods. Add to this the fact the various Book Club Editions sometimes use the First Edition imprints without removing the reference to First Edition and all bets are off. This leaves book collectors in a quandary as to the pedigree of their beloved First Editions.

What Bill McBride has attempted to do in this handy guide is first define what a First Edition is, and more importantly what it is not. Second and also of importance he has extensively investigated various Publishers and denoted how they treat the First Edition issue.

Much expanded from the last version issued in 2002, the 2012 issue lists 5,835 past and present English language publishers and the methods they use to identify First Editions.

As this is truly a pocket guide you can take it with you.

A great resource tool for book collectors. Recommended.

The reference guide "A Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions" is an excellent pocket guide for the book buyer, the book collector, and the book seller who is interested in knowing the number lines and the lettering systems used by different publishers both past and present in order to identify true first editions of books. It is small enough to take with you just about anywhere you go, which is real handy whenever you are scouting for books or just in the hunt for first edition books that are true first editions. However, a word of caution is necessary here. This is just what it says it is - a guide. If you want to actually know what makes certain first edition books valuable, or just more about the world of book selling and collecting, then this guide by itself will fail to meet your needs. There are many good books available that go into the actual details of what you should be looking for when determining the value and the grade of books. But, as a reference guide to the actual numbering and/or lettering systems used by publishers (and there are quite a few different systems used), this is an excellent resource.

About the Author

Carol Krueger received a DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Miami and has taught in public schools as well as in higher education. An active clinician and guest conductor, Dr. Krueger is widely recognized for her work with music literacy and has presented interest sessions at the American Choral Directors National Convention in New York, the ACDA Southern Division Convention in Nashville, and at MENC and ACDA state conventions throughout the United States.

Every music educator needs to consider this method. It simplifies so many aspects of the foundations music. I feel armed and ready to teach with new outlook and enthusiasm. I highly recommend taking Dr. K's workshop, too.

Comprehensive overview

This book is an exhaustive look at sight-singing. It almost gives too much information, but all the information is relevant to the subject. I recommed this book to anyone who has a general knowledge of music theory and would like to apply a sight-singing technique to increase their musicianship. Many students have a basic understanding of music theory, but have not created an inner ear or inner rhythm. This book shows you how to develop both.

Fantastic book--a MUST!

I have recently used this book and it is fascinating! Dr. Krueger takes sight singing to a new, comfortable, and well paced level. She believes in training the ear before the reading and writing, instead of throwing multiple ideas at the students. I highly recommend this book for college-level or even high school music students. If you ever have the chance to meet or take a class from Dr. K at the University of South Carolina, DO IT!
