Paul Davidovits, Professor of Chemistry at Boston College, was co-awarded the prestigious R.W. Wood prize from the Optical Society of America for his seminal work in optics. His contribution was foundational in the field of confocal microscopy, which allows engineers and biologists to produce optical sections through 3D objects such as semiconductor circuits, living tissues, or a single cell. Dr. Davidovits earned his doctorate, masters, and undergraduate degrees from Columbia University. Prior to his appointment at Boston College, he was a faculty member at Yale University. He has published more than 150 papers in physical chemistry and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and of the American Association for Advancement of Science. Reading PHYSICS IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE, Third Edition,I have been thoroughly impressed by Professor Davidovits scholarly depth and persuasive sincerity. Moreover, his uncanny ability to communicate difficult concepts in surprisingly accessible and yet technically accurate language is certainly rare. The book reviewed here can be profitably employed as a faithful companion to the regular text adopted by any instructor, for a one-year course of general physics to biology and premed students.

Brilliant, Faithful, Existentially Satisfying

To avoid prepping for the General Ordination Exams (that I take in two days!), I've been commenting on various year-end lists. On one "Top Theology Books of 2012," I suggested that the author check out Fleming Rutledge's collection of Old Testament sermons. It's brilliant and accessible; existentially satisfying and faithful to the biblical texts. When I simply can't bring myself to pick up the Bible, or find my own ears and eyes completely deaf and blind to it, her clear yet round-about proclamation always seems to penetrate my numbness: unclogging my ears and unscaling my eyes. Rutledge's corpus has served as a daily devotional for most of this year.

Great Devotional-Quality Book of Sermons

When did you last hear a series of sermons that deeply engage the Christian Old Testament? Rev. Fleming Rutledge provides in "And God Spoke to Abraham" a rich resource for Christians looking for serious engagement with Old Testament texts.

Rutledge is an evangelical Anglican who has served numerous churches and traveled widely as a guest speaker. Reading a sermon is never the same as hearing a sermon but they still provide a window into one congregation's engagement with the Bible. The sermons are short enough that I could read one as my daily devotional. Recommended!

This collection of sermons on texts from the Old Testament is an outstanding resource for preachers who seek to address the full canon of scripture, "the whole counsel of God" and for laity who wish to wrestle with the God who speaks and acts in history. I prefer the Disney art books to this one, which isn't quite in-depth enough to satisfy the true animation lover. For those who just want a look at the world of animation, this is good, but those who really loved the movie and want to know all about its making will be somewhat disappointed. Still, what's there is very beautiful to look at.

The artwork of this book is very inspirational.

I am a big fan of Don Bluth and Gary Goldman so I liked their introductions in this book. For example, how they initially got a call from 20th Century Fox to create this feature. I liked the artwork that was featured in The Art of Anastasia, but I feel that the book could have been more in-depth. Deneroff could have written more about the process, the actual production of the feature, and perhaps mini-biographies of the people behind the film. However, the book should be fun for casual animation fans. Yet, true animation-philes may be somewhat disappointed.

I thought I was buying a large book like the Art of Disney books, but it turns out this books has 98 pages instead of 192, which says so in the product details. So I was disappointed.
Other than that I think it's a fine book. If you're a fan of the film this is a book you should take a look at.

Andrew F. Branca is an attorney and the internationally recognized expert on self-defense law. I'm still reading it (about 1/4 of the way through) and so far I would be giving it 5 Stars but I must agree with other reviews I've seen. I can't believe how many grammatical and spelling errors there are (or is it "there is"? Lol - I'm no pro.) I'm not a very good reader or speller and I usually just skip over errors without a thought but... I can't help but sigh out loud every time I come across an error at this point in the book because there is an abnormal amount that is very odd to find in a published book. I'm far from picky and am usually the first to defend those that make mistakes but, for those that have purchased and read this book, you have to admit, it's a bit surprising that a college educated/attorney/ Professional would allow something of this caliper to go out to the public. Maybe it helped keep the cost down by not having professional editing done. Anyways, I'm glad I bought the book. And very thankful that Andrew Branca took the time to write it and provide it to us as an educational resource so that we can better protect ourselves, family, and community. Andrew, I hope you keep putting it out there for us, with or without errors.

I'm not a reader. My mind tends to wander while reading most books; which makes it difficult to follow. "The Law of Self Defense" was definitely an exception! It is very informative. I found myself thinking "I've never thought about it that way before" and "very clever," several times. This book explains legal jargon in a way that is easy to understand without making the reader feel like a dummy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a lot while reading it. I've marked several pages and taken lots of notes from the material so that I may share with my gun safety students and fellow instructors. I highly recommend "The Law of Self Defense."

Really love this book! This isn't a "how to" book, but gives you more insight on how the "system works." The case studies contained in the book are very insightful - and scary at times. People who legally concealed carry can benefit from this book, their seems to be a lot of gray areas in the justice system. I would highly recommend this book,.

this book was amazing!

i was really shocked to find out how much me and the author have in common (the author has Asperger's syndrome which is what I've been wondering if i have for a few years), he too wasn't diagnosed until mid-life. same with the sensitivity, high emotion, not understanding or having interest in people. when i was a real little kid, whenever i saw someone crying i immediately cried just because they were. i swear it's like i felt the same pain they were feeling and i was inconsolable. I've never met in my whole life someone else with empathy like that until i read this. i thought there was something wrong with me. same with all the other traits we on the ASD have.

1. i love that he clearly states several times "always assume intellect." about people with autism because i like to believe most people with disabilities, even the really severe and dependent, are a completely normal intellectual person, whole soul on the inside of their broken body. it's just that they either don't communicate well, or not at all so those around them, family, teachers, caretakers, may never know this. but maybe since William Stillman wrote this book who knows how many people have been more than helped with knowing their autistic person. if you have someone in your family, your spouse, neighborhood, school, at work, church etc. etc. (or you have it) and you have an open mind to spiritual possibilities, this book will rock your world.

2. there's personal accounts of those he met, parents, kids and grown adults affected with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their personal stories.

3. I find anyway, in my opinion, their lives and experiences to be a true inspiration that the mainstream public has to know exists. it's tragic how underestimated they are because of their symptoms and reading this gave me hope people like William are shining some light to help tell so many people's truths. i mean some things people shared with their Facilitated Communication (typing) device that happened and/or continue to happen are what most of us would call miracles. it made family openly weep from joy and shock in front of "Bill." who they probably spent only a few minutes with at the time. it boggles my mind that none of their experiences are news to tell those affected that your child being diagnosed with any Autism Spectrum Disorder isn't only horribly tragic your life is over kind of speech. that's the attitude i hear too often. but that good things, rather amazing things can also happen.

4. my favorite part is that what i read from the, how William puts it, "exquisitely sensitive" with autism made me realize life itself, everything we experience, every living creature is a gift and a miracle. all we have to do is open our eyes and actually look and listen to our life and all that is around us. heck, all of it, every chapter was my favorite part. i really hope you enjoy it. it helped me and opened my eyes and heart so much spiritually.

I could not put this book down. William Stillman has the ability to understand those with autism because he himself went through the pain of being on the spectrum. His ability to teach people how to work with and treat these people was a true eye opener. God bless him and his work.

This book is well- written and absolutely right on with the author's information shared concerning autism . Our family is affected by autism and so much of the research and related material in this title is so meaningful. I would encourage any person with an interest in learning more about this disability to read William Stillman's work.

Preferred for history and sights over alternative titles

Eyewitness is my preferred travel guide for history and sights over alternative brands of travel book.

It doesn't have all the hotel and restaurant info that some of the others do, but that kind of info gets out of date so quickly and can all be found online.

I'm pretty sure the restaurants and places listed in these books will be around for years to come. Most of the info is about structures and attractions which don't change very often.

The pull-out maps are quite handy if you can bring yourself to actually tear them out of the book!

I read through these at home but am going to purchase the Kindle versions for use on my iPad mini while traveling.

Eyewitness always does a very nice treatment of the target country. For me this was more of a planning/what's possible book than an actual guidebook you would carry along with you (it's a bit heavy). Use Rick Steve's for that. I seem to remember being more impressed with the first one I bought years ago (France), the one on Germany had plenty of pictures, but many of them seemed very tiny, almost like thumbnails, making it hard to appreciate the subject. Nevertheless, a great reference for planning a trip, and highly recommended.

This was a very good guide, even excellent. However, some of the map information seemed to be lacking. In some cases when I was trying to locate something on a particular map and the coordinates were given, the map did not contain the coordinates. The restaurant section could contain more recommendations in some of the cities. All in all, I found this guide to be excellent except for the above mentioned problems. The sightseeing sections are the best there are of any guides.
