About the Author
Allysa Torey and Jennifer Appel are the founders of the Magnolia Bakery in New York City. In 1999 Jennifer Appel left to open Buttercup Bake Shop, which has two locations in Manhattan, where she resides with her husband and daughter. Allysa Torey lives with her son Wilson Henry in upstate New York, where she spends her time writing, cooking, gardening, and taking long walks through the hayfields with her collies Sam, Daisy, and Honey.

You love it, but your waistline won't

If you don't actually own any of the previous magnolia cookbooks, you'll find this one is PERFECT. Fantastic recipes, from frostings and cakes to muffins and cookies. I use the cream cheese recipe in here as my go-to frosting recipe.

Honestly, the book is great. It's a great staple for my recipe library and the recipes range in difficulty from easy to hard. If you don't have this in your cupboard, then I would make sure it gets there!!

This is a really good one.

I love this book. As a city planning professor and a practicing city planner, I've been waiting for this book. My planning students are expected to demonstrate a working knowledge in executing graphic design for presentations, posters, resumes, portfolios, maps, information graphics, books/plans, and many other products. Most of my students don't have confidence in their graphics skills because it is very hard to teach students how to be good designers. A quick page through Lewis' book, students "get it" and are eager to understand the art and science behind her intelligently crafted lessons. This book is now required reading for every student in the city planning program. I am certain that the quality of our students' graphic communications skills will rise as a result. Although this book's title suggests that it is for architects, city planners, landscape architects, and other similar fields of study will greatly benefit from the books lessons. Even MBA students with great business ideas could learn how to 'wow' their cohorts in presentations and with their final products. In fact, professionals in any field can learn how to become more convincing by using graphics in a smart way. This gorgeous work is already one of my favorite reference books and I predict it will become an important resource inside and outside of classroom. I'll bet that you will love it, too.

A BOOK BY THE ELDEST OF THE FOX SISTERS

Ann Leah Underhill (1814-1890) was eldest of the Fox sisters whose reports of spirit "rappings" launched the Spiritualist movement in the 19th century; Leah was the manager of her two younger sisters (the next-older sister Margaret ultimately confessed in 1888---before this book was written---to bogus "manifestations").

As her sisters' rappings became known, "Many of our visitors were anxious to learn, through the Spirits, how to make a fortune. Some wished to know the secrets of others... some wanted to know what numbers they should buy in a lottery, to be successful; others would wish to be advised in their stock speculations. To all such questions ready responses were given, but invariably ended in failures." (Pg. 52-53) After they engaged a hall to display their show, "Our career was now commenced. After all our resolving not to go any more before the public, we had been forced to let the world know what was revealed to us, and what was meant not for us alone." (Pg. 117) Later, she admits, "We received a good deal of money... but it was as freely spent as given. We, none of us, have ever been accused of the spirit of hoarding..." (Pg. 263-264)

She quotes a 1851 newspaper account which presciently stated, "the rappings... are produced by the action of the will, through voluntary action on the joints... the noises precisely identical with the 'spiritual rappings' may be produced in the knee joints." (Pg. 169) She indignantly replied to the paper, "we are very willing to undergo a proper and decent examination, provided we can select three male and three female friends who shall be present on the occasion." The examination was arranged, and "as we, Maggie and I, sat together on a sofe, and after long waiting no raps came, one of them rested his arm on the back of the sofa and actually, with his knuckles, made behind me three raps which were not a bad imitation." (Pg. 172-173) She recounts another test environment, when investigators concluded "the mediums have no more power over the sounds than the investigators have." (Pg. 259)

A primary source written by the eldest Fox sister, a founder of Modern Spiritualism. I gave this volume three stars because the writing style is more difficult for the 21st century reader than many other 19th century authors. I kept expecting to encounter the Lord Blackadder's 'contrafibularities,' his comedic attempt to out smart Dr. Johnson.

Karen Blanchard and Christine Root each have taught English language instruction at the university level for more than twenty years. Karen has an M.S.Ed in TESOL from the University of Pennsylvania, and Christine has an M.Ed in English Education from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. They began their textbook collaboration with the "Ready to Write" series while they were lecturers at the University of Pennsylvania. The book commences with a review of coastal bottom boundary layer flows including the boundary layer interaction between waves and steady currents. The concept of eddy viscosity for these flows is discussed in depth because of its relation to sediment diffusivity. The quasi-steady processes of sediment transport over flat beds are discussed. Small scale coastal bedforms and the corresponding hydraulic roughness are described. The motion of suspended sand particles is studied in detail with emphasis on the possible suspension maintaining mechanisms in coastal flows. Sediment pickup functions are provided for unsteady flows. A new combined convection-diffusion model is provided for suspended sediment distributions. Different methods of sediment transport model building are presented together with some classical models.

Adult/High School–This novel opens with the title character's first memory: as a cub floating in the ocean with a nutshell for a life raft, he heads straight for a giant whirlpool threatening to suck him down. After he's rescued by a boatload of Lilliputian pirates, Bluebear enters into a life (or 13½ lifetimes) filled with humor and adventure. Each life has a different challenge to overcome, pitting him against the likes of headless giants and storytelling contests. The book is one part Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth and two parts Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Each adventure mixes fantasy, science fiction, and fables in a satirical cocktail that readers can't help but gulp down. The quirky writing is definitely strong enough to carry itself, but Moers includes several black-and-white illustrations that enhance the whimsy. With so many little side trips in Bluebear's narrative, the story might frustrate those who prefer straight-line plots. But this is the kind of tale that readers have to just sit back and enjoy, wherever it takes them. The ending does tie the loose threads together. A wild, fun-filled ride.–Matthew L. A blue bear named Bluebear begins his adventures in Zamonia, which was once part of the lands humans know, when small enough to float in a walnut shell bobbing toward a hole in the sea. He is rescued by the Minipirates, who are so small that ordinary sea-goers have no inkling of their mastery of the sea. Eventually, he grows too large to remain with the Minipirates, who regretfully maroon him on an island. In his subsequent travels, he meets fabulous and exotic people, makes friends and loses them, and is aided by a mental copy of Professor Nightingale's Encyclopaedia, his graduation gift from the professor's school. His story is illustrated by a vast number of bizarre black-and-white drawings that complement the chatty, easy prose perfectly. Bluebear still has 13 lives to go at the conclusion of his narrative because all bluebears live 27 lives, and he keeps the bluebears' secret for their sake. The tone in which the book ends is pleasant, for all adventurers eventually learn to settle down. Regina Schroeder

The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Blue Bear is the story of, well, the 13 1/2 lives of Captain Blue Bear. Like Walter Moers other stories, Blue Bear is a mix of fantasy and comedy set in Zamonia, a world like ours, only different. In his later novel, The City of Dreaming Books, he combines these literary genres flawlessly keeping the reader thirsty for more, but I felt that Blue Bear's background was drawn out to far making the overall story dry as the Demara Desert, yet palatable. Frequent excerpts from the Encyclopedia of Marvels, Life Forms and Other Phenomena of Zamonia and its Environs provided necessary story elements, but often pushed me to skip ahead a page just to avoid delving into the equally lengthy descriptions that began entertaining and later grew tedious. I expected more from a seasoned comic writer such a Moers, but this was not one of his best works.

Best Most CREATIVE AudioBook Ever! 5 's

After listening to the audio version of this book I had to get the paperback and read it to my daughter! Please if you can find the time "commuting to work" to listen first DO IT! The books characters have some many different voices and the man that narrates it is BOSS!!! If you can afford the audio and paperback then pirate the audio and then purchase the paper back. This man needs many thanks for having such a great since of imagination, so get this and support the funny happy time it gives to us all! Hope this helped someone, even if it's just 1 of you ✌️

This book was recommended to me by a German friend who grew up reading it. I could not put it down! There is constantly a new adventure and more excitement on every page. As a college student the novel was complex enough to keep my attention and simple enough to restore my childlike wonder (similar to harry potter). Highly recommend.

I first found this book in a dumpster behind a school. I was 6 years old and read this book. Many of the concepts were easy enough to understand as a youngster. I will never forget the concept of 3phase electricity that I grasped from that book. Thanks to this book I have put instrumentation on the International Space Station and work with Femtosecond laser systems.

My all time favorite basic electricity book.

I'm a power plant operator. I've had to take basic electricity courses for job promotions, (after taking a written test). This is the only book written (that my co-workers and I have had to study) that you can learn from on your own. The other books seemed to be written for a classroom setting, with an instructor.
