A complete reference on cartooning the head and figure.

This book is a clearly written, easy to follow, detailed and concise handbook on cartooning the head and figure by using several different styles and variations, and emphasizing humor and exaggeration. This fully illustrated reference contains over 3,000 step-by-step diagrams and illustrations and is structured into sixteen carefully organized sections that cover the basic and not so basic principles of cartooning.
It includes general topics like caricatures, cartooning styles and techniques, the head and face, the standing, walking and running figure, different positions for the figure, and emotions and facial expressions (the alphabetized catalog of 150 emotions and expressions alone is worth the price of this book). He also goes into specific topics like hands, feet and clothing, pretty girls, babies and children, and sports cartoons. As an added bonus he includes additional topics such as Advertising Applications for Cartoons and Special Problems which cover specific characters like hobos, tramps and the military, and conversations, special attires and crowds, among others.
By studying this book as if it were a textbook on a course, doing all the exercises and reviewing each section afterwards, my cartoons have come to life in a very, very short time.
The invaluable and practical advice in this book is essential for any artist's reference library and can be particularly useful for beginners, cartoonists, animators, characters designers, and comic book artists. It also serves as a great source book for ideas.

Excellent!

I own most of Mr. Hamm's books now and all of them are excellent.

Some caution though for comic book artists wannabes, this book

doesn't teach you action oriented cartoons. Get "Action!

Cartooning" by Ben Caldwell instead.

However, Mr. Hamm's book is a classic because it's not just a

how-to book but rather a book founded on good art principles

considering Mr. Hamm isn't just a "cartoonist" but a true

artist.

Get this book! You won't be disappointed.

The greatest intoduction to CARTOONING ever written

"Cartooning the Head & Figure" --by Jack Hamm

Artist and Christian minister Jack Hamm passed from this world at the age of 81. He illustrated the notable cartoon strip characters "BUGS BUNNY" and "ALLEY OOP" early in his career as an artist. He wrote and illustrated over 25 books on drawing. He pioneered an early TV show on drawing instruction in the Dallas/Houston Texas area.

I admit I am not an expert on fine art, but after reviewing many books which teach beginners HOW-TO-DRAW, it is my sincere opinion that Jack Hamm is the finest instructor America ever produced. Hamm almost never composed text, or used wordy explanations about drawing something. Hamm drew you a picture or series of pictures and showed how it might be done. He did not do this ..."sometimes" in his books. Hamm did this ALL THE TIME, whether it was cartoon figures, seascapes, landscapes, or drawing the human figure.

That is why any effort to list all the contents of his book, "CARTOONING THE HEAD & FIGURE" staggers the human imagination. I might be sitting at the computer for several hours, just listing the contents. Hamm shows how to draw every possible human emotion. Pages 22 & 23 alone are specific instructions in how to draw particular parts of the face to yield a human feeling.

The amazing thing is, Hamm is offering a book not only that adults can use; rather, Hamm is offering a book that CHILDREN can use. This book is in a class by itself, just as is Hamm's classic on drawing the human figure. Hamm's books are one of the richest treasures ever produced on American soil.

Some of the greatest articles from HBR but it leaves you wanting more

I am an avid reader of hbr and I've really tried to step up my reading about EI. There are several great articles but the articles in the end of the book seem to struggle to add value. It's a great book but you may be better off getting a subscription to hbr.org and pull up more articles on your own.

Mastering Your Emotion is an Important Skill! This Book Helps!

There is no doubt now that having a well-honed emotional intelligence will make it easy for an individual to succeed, especially during this time when every opportunity to connect is available. This maybe one of the reasons why organizations such as Harvard Business Review continuously devote time, effort and financial resources to help our leaders all around the globe regardless of industry or occupation develop these sets of competencies.

In this book, HBR compiles the best collections of its magazine articles which deal with different aspects of emotional intelligence. Of course, the discussion of this subject will not be complete without citing the works of Daniel Goleman. Hence, the very first article you will read is What Makes a Leader. This article discusses the different components of emotional intelligence, namely, self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.

Other articles are also treasure-trove of wisdom. In the Price of Incivility: Lack of respect hurts morale-and the bottom line Christine Porath and Christine Pearson talks about the negative effect of rude behaviors in different companies. I find each article helpful in its own right. There are things that make me think about the things around me. You cannot learn this by just reading this book. You must act on it and it a part of your behaviors. But first you must know what you need to practice. This book will help.

Great collection of articles on EI. The first article on What Makes a Leader is probably the best HBR article that I've ever read. The articles on EI have been beneficial throughout my career. I revisit them periodically when I feel I need a reminder on how to use my EI skills.

My favorite "first animation book"

There are a lot of great animation books out there, but Bob Godfrey's "The Do It Yourself Animation Book" is still one of my favorites. I've had my copy of this little book for around 23 years. I would pull it out to show kids when I do animation "mini-seminars"; once I loaned it to an animation instructor friend and didn't get it back for months! It's a very friendly, humorous, non-technical, non-intimidating guide to making your own hand-drawn animations. It suggests all sort of relatively low-budget, simple ways to get started--in fact the main message seems to be simply to get started and have fun!

No better book - but don't pay silly prices

I bought this book when it was first published in 1974. There is no better introduction to the creation of cartoon or caricature animations. Full of fascinating sketches, hints, tips and techniques and written by one of the masters of the genre.

But some of the prices being asked for this slim little book do seem utterly ridiculous. Look in charity shops, carboot sales, second-hand bookshops etc.

If you find it, you'll wonder how you ever did without it.

About the Author
Gerard J. Connors, PhD, is Senior Research Scientist and former Director of the University at Buffalo Research Institute on Addictions. His clinical research interests include treatment of substance use disorders, patient-treatment matching, early interventions with heavy drinkers, the role of the therapeutic alliance in addictions treatment, and treatment outcome evaluation. Dr. Connors has authored or coauthored over 100 articles, book chapters, and books in the area of alcoholism and addictive behaviors.

Carlo C. DiClemente, PhD, ABPP, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), and Director of the MDQuit tobacco resource center and the Center for Community Collaboration at UMBC. He is co-developer of the transtheoretical model of behavior change and is the author of numerous scientific publications on motivation and behavior change. His books include Substance Abuse Treatment and the Stages of Change, Second Edition (coauthored with Gerard J. Connors, Mary Marden Velasquez, and Dennis M. Donovan), Addiction and Change: How Addictions Develop and Addicted People Recover, and the self-help resource Changing for Good. Dr. DiClemente is a recipient of numerous awards, including, most recently, a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Addictive Behaviors Special Interest Group of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.

Mary Marden Velasquez, PhD, is the Director of the Health Behavior Research and Training (HBRT) Institute at the School of Social Work, University of Texas at Austin. For more than 20 years, Dr. Velasquez has developed and studied behavioral interventions in the areas of group therapy, integrated primary care, screening and brief interventions, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, alcohol and other drug abuse, prenatal health, sexually transmitted disease and HIV prevention, and smoking cessation. With particular expertise in the use of evidence-based brief interventions in health care, substance abuse treatment, and criminal justice settings, she is the author of numerous publications on motivational interventions in high-risk settings. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).

Dennis M. Donovan, PhD, is Director of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He has over 200 publications, including five books, in the area of alcohol and drug dependence. He served as President of the Society of Psychologists in Addictive Behaviors and is a Fellow of Division 28 (Psychopharmacology and Substance Abuse) and Division 50 (Society of Addiction Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.

Basic Information

When I received this book I was somewhat disappointed because my expectation was a full size book (should have read the advertisement better) with patient exercise examples that are progressing in a motivational / stages of change therapy group. The text is good, but I miss the suggested handouts and exercises I could use with my patients. The First Edition provided examples and suggestions on how to proceed with the group process. Well written, but did not help me much in my busy clinic.

This is a great primer for many of us who don't get full instruction into post-modern approaches such as Stages of Change, especially as it pertains to treating clients who want to beat substance abuse.

Light hearted, but completely serious...wonderful!

I preordered this book months ago. I forgot it was coming out this month so was very pleasantly surprised to find it on my doorstep Friday evening. I started reading it that night and while I'm only half way through the book, it is amazing. So many wonderful quotes! So much thought provoking information.

Pam has such a down to earth, honest, funny, light-hearted style. But don't let that fool you there is pure gold in these pages. I did one of the exercises this morning before getting out of bed and immediately felt a shift in how I was viewing the coming day.

If you are wanting to change how you view your life and the world in general, don't wait, get this book.

Thank and Grow Bitter?

I have successfully used the law of attraction to transform every aspect of my life in the last three years (I am currently in the process of buying a lake house in a major metropolitan area). I rarely write negative reviews, but this is the most relentlessly negative law of attraction book I have ever read. And I feel like I need to give people who are currently dealing with challenging financial circumstances a heads up.

When people feel good about themselves and the world, they naturally behave with generosity and kindness. No one needs to be guilt-tripped or frightened into being a good person by being told 75 people will die of malnutrition in the time it takes to finish their cereal (this is an actual example from the book).

My husband and I donate a large proportion of our income, but I still think it is fine for people to have mega-mansions and sports cars (2 things Grout criticizes), because I believe in the infinite wealth of the universe. Fewer people are dying of malnutrition now than they were in the 60's, even though the population has ballooned since then and the rich have gotten richer, because a rising tide (or vibration) lifts all boats.

There is a lot of split energy and contradiction in this book. She takes frequent potshots at other self-help authors and the pointlessness of self help in general, even though that is how she makes a living, and almost all the 'party games' are just thinly disguised ploys to market the book on instagram.

I can honestly say almost all the self help I have read has really helped me. Pretty much anything a person resonates with will work. There are infinite possible routes to the same destination.

She also criticizes meditation at several points, even though many of the people featured in the book attribute their success to a meditation practice, and it is the cornerstone of various completely valid spiritual paths.

She berates the 1% and romanticizes pre-industrial societies, while also jetting around the world and zip-lining at luxury resorts or eating barbecued lobster in the rain forest. She brags about having resources 'out the wazoo,' while putting other rich people down multiple times.

I loved Pam's first book. She just needs to clear some beliefs before she writes the next one.

If someone is struggling financially and is looking for something that will transform their life into the most incandescently happy and prosperous it has ever been through gratitude, I highly recommend The Magic (The Secret). This book is completely positive (There is a reason Rhonda Byrne is the most successful law of attraction teacher. She obviously practices what she preaches!). It is also easy to find used for the price of a cup of coffee.

Disappointing

I really tried to keep myself from writing a bad review for this one, but one can only handle so much self-restraint, right?
First of all, let me say I'm a huge Pam Grout fan. I devoured E-Squared, E-Cubed, and Jumpstart Your Metabolism. I anticipated this latest book for 3 months, my hopes were high.
The book started off great, too. Very inspired thoughts on gratitude, I highlighted a good chunk of that first half. Until I reached the exercises (or Party Games as Pam calls them). I had expected a practical series of 30 experiments as the title suggests, but these party games were put together very sloppily, they were clearly added just to please the editor (as Pam admits). I didn't even get what I was supposed to do in many of them. They read like a stream-of-consciousness rather than, you know, a book.

What's worse, Pam keeps guilt-tripping rich people (or those aspiring for great riches) throughout the exercises, suggesting the more you have, the less other people will. That is so backwards for a LOA writer! All the buzz she created during Part 1, she kills in Part 2. It's as if 2 different authors wrote the 2 parts.

I had to force myself to finish this one, and felt worse than I did when I had started, and I think this says a lot about a book that's supposedly on gratitude. So consider yourself warned. Sorry Pam, but I think you need to study some Abraham-Hicks and clear those contradicting beliefs before you set out to write another of these.
