The Devil That Never Dies: The Rise and Threat of Global Antisemitism, by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen

A groundbreaking--and terrifying--examination of the widespread resurgence of antisemitism in the 21st century, by the prize-winning and #1 internationally bestselling author of Hitler's Willing Executioners.

Antisemitism never went away, but since the turn of the century it has multiplied beyond what anyone would have predicted. It is openly spread by intellectuals, politicians and religious leaders in Europe, Asia, the Arab world, America and Africa and supported by hundreds of millions more. Indeed, today antisemitism is stronger than any time since the Holocaust.

In THE DEVIL THAT NEVER DIES, Daniel Jonah Goldhagen reveals the unprecedented, global form of this age-old hatred; its strategic use by states; its powerful appeal to individuals and groups; and how technology has fueled the flames that had been smoldering prior to the millennium.

A remarkable work of intellectual brilliance, moral stature, and urgent alarm, THE DEVIL THAT NEVER DIES is destined to be one of the most provocative and talked-about books of the year.

From Booklist
Anti-Semitism has often been compared to a deadly virus, characterized by long latent periods and then reemerging in new and even more virulent forms. Goldhagen, who has specialized in provocative, controversial works on the Holocaust and anti-Semitism, examines the virus in its latest, terrifying form. Per this author, anti-Semitism has broken free of its centuries-old host in Europe and now infects institutions and individuals across the world. Facilitated by the global nature of modern communication, the old blood libels, distortions, and wild conspiracy theories about Jews are now widely believed and expressed in places as far flung as Malaysia, West Africa, and Pakistan, none of which have indigenous Jewish populations. Goldhagen maintains that international organizations, including the United Nations and some so-called human-rights groups, use the mask of anti-Zionism or opposition to Israel to nurture and reinforce hatred of Jews. At the same time, there has been a resurgence of anti-Semitism in traditional places in Europe, and it transcends the political barriers of the Left and the Right. As in his earlier works, Goldhagen tends to paint with too broad a brush, but this is still an important investigation of an undeniably dangerous phenomenon. --Jay Freeman

Review
"No other writer has held mass murderers, deniers of truth, and propagators of hate to a higher standard of moral accountability than Daniel Jonah Goldhagen....His latest, The Devil that Never Dies, doubtlessly will shatter the way people think about anti-Semitism---both in its past incarnations and present day existence....When the world's manmade atrocities, moral failures, and blatant hypocrisies occur, he has proven himself time and again to be a righteous chronicler on behalf of the persecute and the dead."
---Thane Rosenbaum, Huffington Post

"A frightening exposition on how anti-Semitism has become a global phenomenon....Devil is bursting with information and insight."
---Neal Gendler, American Jewish World

"Former Harvard professor Goldhagen comes out swinging in this frontal assault on anti-Semitism and its practitioners and does not pause for breath until the final page.... A frightening photograph of a mutable demon so many fail to recognize and continue to embrace."
--- Kirkus Reviews

"An important new book....A chilling explication of the explosion of anti-Semitism in the last two decades, fueled by the Internet and other modern means of global communications, as well as a sophisticated analysis of the inter-related international institutions and political trends that underpin it. It is essential reading."
--- Rick Richman, Commentary

"Effective and disturbing....Rhetorically and sometimes physically violent anti-Semitism over the past dozen years or so is shocking in part because it does not seem to shock."
--- Jeffrey Goldberg, New York Times

"Explosive....Goldhagen's main points are hard to contradict."
--- David Mikics, Tablet Magazine

"Daniel Goldhagen's new book hits hard. This tour de force makes a chillingly compelling case that global anti-Semitism on the rise....Goldhagen's material can overwhelm and be tough going for the faint of heart. Yet his passionate compulsion to make his case beyond a shadow of a doubt is understandable, and he does so with brilliance....In The Devil That Never Dies, he does everything within his formidable intellectual power to confront anti-Semitism and make us aware that this devil is real."
--- Sharon Rosen Leib, San Diego Jewish Journal

"Important and timely....The dangers Goldhagen outlines in this brilliant work should sound a clarion call for governmental and societal intervention."

global antisemitism and its lethal force
By Ursula D. Pollak
THE DEVIL THAT NEVER DIES by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen

A bare seven decades after THE WORLD `learned' that six million Jews were systematically murdered by Nazi Germany with impressive efficiency in a relatively short amount of time, Jew-hatred is back in full force - this time on a global scale. In response, Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, the author of HITLER'S WILLING EXECUTIONER has published "THE DEVIL THAT NEVER DIES - The Rise and Threat of Global Antisemitism". It is a much needed book, including in the US where antisemitism has become a taboo in the public sphere and where one may be lulled into the belief that this age-old scourge has lost its deadly force.

It is troubling to read that just like in Germany in the late nineteen hundreds, antisemitism has once again taken a new foothold in academia in the US and even more pronounced in European countries which either collaborated or stood by while the Nazi regime murdered two thirds of its Jews. John Mersheimer and Stephen Walt for instance distribute their specious antisemitism in the guise of respectability and seriousness and use the bogeyman "Israel Lobby" as an example of a nefarious group which takes unfair advantage of non-Jews. The old canards are recycled in a pattern of mind-numbing repetitiveness and are only surprising in their lack of imagination of NOTHING NEW.

In his extensive study, Goldhagen analyzes the singular nature of this particular prejudice and how it reinvents itself year in and year out, decade after decade, century after century to fit new circumstances while staying loyal to its core characteristic: Jews, or THE Jews, are used as the dung heap of any and all human shortcomings AND prejudices, especially in societies which prefer finger pointing to self-criticism. Goldhagen is equally adept at demonstrating that antisemitism withstands better knowledge, logic, facts to the contrary and the passion to willful ignorance of its adherents.

In an interview on Vox Tablet [...] I heard Goldhagen refer to one of the common prejudices against Jews, i.e. " JEWS HAVE TOO MUCH POWER". "What does this even mean?" he then asked rhetorically. Indeed. What does this mean? Which brings me back to the inherent nature of Jew-hatred: It's a dogmatic and quite frankly insane belief system which does not withstand the slightest effort of critical thinking. All told, it reveals more about the hater than about Jews.

Goldhagen lays bare the primordial (atavistic?) attraction of wide a swath of people - most of whom have never met a Jew and will never meet a Jew - to this specific eliminationist prejudice and how and where it thrives the best. While the internet is not to blame for the global reincarnation of this lethal hatred, Goldhagen demonstrates that the internet has been a potent vehicle for its distribution worldwide.

Goldhagen's sources are immense and global, both from classic literature, history books and other printed material. While one reviewer took Goldhagen to task for using mostly sources on the internet, I would like to ask that reviewer "How else does one access the global media?"

I would like to urge every decent, caring person to purchase this book and to read it. It is of special importance for teachers. It is of equal importance to all those who believe that Jew-hatred belongs to the past.

On p. 22, Goldhagen states. "Antisemitism is thought. It is emotion. It is speech. It is action. It is inaction". As a non-Jewish German I appeal to all non-Jews not to give in to inaction vis-a-vis this deadly hatred against a tiny minority in this world.

By Jeffrey Tannenbaum
It is scarey to see the way the world is going. This is a very detailed well writtne and researched book. Anyone who care about hatred in the world and the need to combat it needs to read this book. It is not an easy read but it contains information that is nececessaty to be before the public. Information ia a powefrul tool and Mr Goldhagen uses it well

Horrible truth - Amazingly clear
By Eli B. Perlman
"The Devil that Never Dies" is a book that needs to be read and taken seriously. It exposes the regrowth of hatred toward the Jew and how it has become expected, accepted, and institutionalized the world over. Goldhagen does a remarkable job of bringing many inconvenient facts to the surface for all to examine. This is a must read for all decent people.
