The Yankee Years, by Joe Torre, Tom Verducci

The definitive story of one of the greatest dynasties in baseball history, Joe Torre's New York Yankees.

When Joe Torre took over as manager of the Yankees in 1996, they had not won a World Series title in eighteen years. In that time seventeen others had tried to take the helm of America’s most famous baseball team. Each one was fired by George Steinbrenner. After twelve triumphant seasons—with twelve straight playoff appearances, six pennants, and four World Series titles—Torre left the Yankees as the most beloved manager in baseball. But dealing with players like Jason Giambi, A-Rod, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Roger Clemens, and Randy Johnson is what managing is all about. Here, for the first time, Joe Torre and Tom Verducci take readers inside the dugout, the clubhouse, and the front office, showing what it took to keep the Yankees on top of the baseball world.

About the Author
Joe Torre played for the Braves, the Cardinals, and the Mets before managing all three teams. From 1996 to 2007, Torre managed the New York Yankees. He is currently the manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Tom Verducci is the senior baseball writer for Sports Illustrated and SportsIllustrated.com, and a baseball analyst for the MLB Network. Joe Torre was the fourth choice. The veteran manager was out of work in October of 1995, four months removed from the third firing of his managerial career, when an old friend from his days with the Mets, Arthur Richman, a public relations official and special adviser to Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, called him with a question. “Are you interested in managing the Yankees?” Torre made his interest known without hesitation. “Hell, yeah,” he said. Only 10 days earlier, Torre had interviewed for the general manager’s job with the Yankees, but he had no interest in such an aggravation-filled job at its $350,000 salary, a $150,000 cut from what he had been earning as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals before they fired him in June. His brother Frank Torre did not think managing the Yankees was worth the hassle, either. After all, Steinbrenner had changed managers 21 times in his 23 seasons of ownership, adding Buck Showalter to the bloody casualty list by running him out of town after Showalter refused to acquiesce to a shakeup of his coaching staff. It didn’t matter to Steinbrenner that the Yankees reached the playoffs for the first time in 14 years, even if it was as the first American League wild card team in a strike-shortened season. Showalter’s crimes in Steinbrenner’s book were blowing a two games to one lead in the best-of-five Division Series against the Seattle Mariners, and resisting the coaching changes. “Why do you want this job?” Frank Torre asked his brother. “It’s a no-lose situation for me,” Joe replied. “I need to find out if I can do this or not.” Richman also had recommended to Steinbrenner three managers with higher profiles and greater success than Torre: Sparky Anderson, Tony LaRussa and Davey Johnson. None of those choices panned out. Anderson retired, LaRussa took the managing job in St. Louis and Johnson, returning to his ballplaying roots, took the job in Baltimore. LaRussa and Johnson received far more lucrative contracts than what Steinbrenner wanted to pay his next manager. “I’ve got to admit, I was the last choice,” Torre said. “It didn’t hurt my feelings, because it was an opportunity to work and find out if I can really manage. I certainly was going to have the lumber.”
On Wednesday, November 1, Bob Watson, in his ninth day on the job as general manager after replacing Gene Michael, called Torre while Torre was driving to a golf course in Cincinnati. Watson summoned him to an interview in Tampa, Florida. That evening, Torre met with Steinbrenner, Watson, Michael, assistant general manager Brian Cashman and Joe Molloy, Steinbrenner’s son-in-law and a partner with the team. The next morning, Torre was introduced as the manager of the Yankees at a news conference in the Stadium Club of Yankee Stadium, standing in the same spot where Showalter had stood twelve months earlier as the 1994 AL Manager of the Year.
It was an inauspicious hiring in most every way. Steinbrenner did not bother to attend the introductory event of his new manager. The press grilled Torre. Not only had Torre been fired three times, but also he was 55 years old and brought with him a losing record (894-1,003), not one postseason series victory, and the ignominy of having spent more games over a lifetime of playing and managing without ever getting to the World Series than any other man in history. Torre was a highly accomplished player, even a star player, for 18 seasons with the Braves, Cardinals and Mets. He was named to nine All-Star teams and won one Most Valuable Player Award, with the Cardinals in 1971.When he played his last game in 1977,Torre was one of only 29 players in baseball history to have amassed more than 2,300 hits and an OPS+ of 128 (a measurement of combined on-base and slugging percentages adjusted for league averages and ballpark effects, thus making era-to-era comparisons more equitable). His career profile, however, was dimmed by never having played in the postseason.
Torre’s baseball acumen and leadership skills were so highly regarded that the Mets named him a player/manager at age 36 during the 1977 season. He ceased playing that same year, the first of his five years managing awful Mets teams. When the Mets fired him after the 1981 season, the Braves, owned by Ted Turner, quickly snapped him up. Torre immediately led the Braves to their first division title in 13 years. He lasted only two more seasons with Turner’s Braves. Torre spent almost six years out of baseball, serving as a broadcaster with the California Angels, until the Cardinals hired him to replace the popular Whitey Herzog in 1990. Those five seasons were the only seasons in which Torre did not play or manage in the major leagues since he broke in as a 20-year-old catcher in 1960 with the Milwaukee Braves, a team that also included Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews and Warren Spahn and Joe’s brother Frank.
One of Torre’s great strengths as a manager was that he understood what it was like to both star and struggle at the major league level. For instance, he hit .363 when he won the MVP Award in 1971, and 74 points lower the very next year. “And I tried just as hard both years,” he said. One day in 1975 with the Mets, Torre became the first player in National League history to ground into four double plays, each of them following a single by second baseman Felix Millan. He reacted to such infamy with humor. “I’d like to thank Felix Millan for making all of this possible,” he said.
At his introductory news conference, Torre displayed his cool demeanor and ease in front of a hostile media crowd. He answered questions with humor and optimism, and did not hesitate to talk about his lifetime goal of winning the World Series, something the Yankees had not done in 17 years, the longest drought for the franchise since it won its first in 1921. He knew Steinbrenner had grown restless.
“When you get married, do you think you’re always going to be smiling?” Torre said at the news conference. “I try to think of the potential for good things happening. That’s the World Series. I know here we’ll have the ability to improve the team . . . To have that opportunity is worth all the negative sides.”
All in all, Torre was not warmly received as the replacement for a popular young manager Steinbrenner had chased off after a playoff season. He was an admitted last choice for the job, and soon heard even after his hiring that Steinbrenner was working back channels to see if he could bring Showalter back. Critics regarded Torre as a recycled commodity without portfolio. Torre was in Cincinnati with in-laws on the day after his news conference when a friend from New York called him up.
“Uh, have you seen the back page of the Daily News?”
“No, why?”
The New York Daily News welcomed the hiring of Torre with a huge headline that said, “CLUELESS JOE.” The subhead read, “Torre Has No Idea What He’s Getting Himself Into.” It referenced a column written by Ian O’Connor in which O’Connor said that Torre “came across as naïve at best, desperate at worst.” Wrote O’Connor, “It’s always a sad occasion when man becomes muppet.” A last choice, a placeholder for Showalter, a man without a clue, a muppet . . . this is how Torre was welcomed as the new manager of the New York Yankees. None of it bothered him.
“It didn’t matter to me,” Torre said. “I was so tickled to have the opportunity that none of it mattered. I was a little nervous starting out with it. Every time you get fired there is always something you think you can do better. I started thinking, maybe I have to do this different or that different. And then one day before spring training began, I was thumbing through a book by Bill Parcells, the football coach. He said something like, ‘If you believe in something, stay with it.’ And that was enough for me.”
Under Torre’s recommendation, with input from Torre’s new bench coach, Don Zimmer,Watson’s first major player move was to acquire a strong defensive catcher to replace Mike Stanley, who was popular with Yankees fans for his hitting but was never known for his defense. On November 20, Watson traded relief pitcher Mike DeJean to the Colorado Rockies for Joe Girardi. It was the start of a frantic, sometimes curious 40-day period in which Watson, with assistance from Michael and, of course, Steinbrenner, assembled nearly a third of the 1996 roster, getting Girardi, first baseman Tino Martinez, reliever Jeff Nelson and outfielder Tim Raines in shrewd trades, signing second baseman Mariano Duncan and pitcher Kenny Rogers as free agents, and re-signing third baseman Wade Boggs and David Cone, their own free agent.
Actually, Cone’s signing had less to do with Watson but instead illustrated the sheer force and will Steinbrenner exerted over the baseball operations of the Yankees, who were the richest club in baseball but had yet to grow into the financial behemoth that would put them so far ahead of the 29 other franchises. In 1995, Steinbrenner spent $58.1 million on payroll, the most in baseball, but a somewhat reasonable 19 percent more than the second-biggest spender, the Baltimore Orioles. The 1996 Yankees would draw 2.2 million fans to Yankee Stadium, ranking them seventh among the 14 American League teams. Cone was set to re-sign with the Yankees until Watson called his agent, Steve Fehr, to suddenly reduce the terms of the deal. An angered Cone immediately entered into negotiations with the Orioles, negotiations that moved so quickly the Orioles began internal plans for an afternoon news conference to announce his signing. One small hangup remained, however. “I probably would have signed if it wasn’t fo...

An insightful look at America's game
By Julie Neal
I am not a Yankee fan. I am not a Red Sox fan. I have no dog in this fight.

Now, with that out of the way, I hope you'll give me a fair shake at this.

My opinion: this is a good read, at times even gripping. Its value lies beyond what gossip it contains about A-Rod or how it gets back at the Steinbrenners. It's an inside look at how baseball has changed, in ways that are often not that good.

I thought The Yankee Years would be a routine behind-the-scenes tell-all, but its ambitions are bigger. It chronicles the end of an era in baseball, a more innocent time before steroid scandals, big money and executive decisions based on advanced statistical analysis.

This is not a Joe Torre memoir. Torre provides his voice and viewpoint throughout the book, but Verducci also quotes dozens and dozens of other key personalities. He weaves it all into a fascinating narrative that covers all the highs and lows of the Yankee's dynasty years.

The book throws a spotlight on many key players from this era. Some shine, others don't. David Cone, Mike Mussina and Derek Jeter shine. Jeter, in particular, impresses throughout with his sunny optimism and quiet leadership. If you weren't a Jeter fan before, you will be after reading it.

There has been a lot of buzz about Torre dissing players in these pages. The "A-Fraud" reference to Alex Rodriguez is a throwaway reference to what guys in the clubhouse -- not Torre -- called A-Rod in 2004, about how the player tried to fit in during his first season as a Yankee. "People in the clubhouse, including teammates and support personnel, were calling him `A-Fraud' behind his back." Instead, Torre offers his clear-eyed assessment of Rodriguez as a player who can't succeed as a team player because of his fear of failure. "There's a certain free-fall you have to go through," he says, "when you commit yourself without a guarantee that it's always going to be good. There's a sort of trust, a trust and commitment thing that has to allow yourself to fail. Allow yourself to be embarrassed. Allow yourself to be vulnerable. And sometimes players aren't willing to do that."

It's almost biblical the way it all ends. A cloud of midges on a hot Cleveland night dooms the Yankees in a key playoff game. Thousands of the irritating insects descend on the mound, thoroughly rattling the pitcher. Bug spray makes the torment worse, not better. This perfect swarm seals Torre's fate. He leaves the Yankees not long after the loss, after a painful 10-minute meeting where he realizes his own personal Judas is his long-time general manager, Brian Cashman. "Cashman had retreated to silence with Torre's job on the line. The allies of Joe Torre had dwindled to zero."

Throughout the arc of this tale, Torre comes across as calm, determined and fair.

I should admit I do have a slight bias. When I was in junior high growing up outside St. Louis, Joe Torre taught me to play infield. He was playing third base for the Cardinals then. He appeared at the community center in my neighborhood outside the city one day and gave a handful of us kids a free lesson. I'll never forget it; he was patient and explained the game in detail, like he actually cared that we understood it. I learned a lot in that hour, from a decent man.

Here's the chapter list:

1. Underdogs
2. A Desperation to Win
3. Getting an Edge
4. The Boss
5. Mystique and Aura
6. Baseball Catches Up
7. The Ghosts Make a Final Appearance
8. The Issues of Alex
9. Marching to Different Drumbeats
10. End of the Curse
11. The Abyss
12. Broken Trust
13. "We Have a Problem"
14. The Last Race
15. Attack of the Midges
16. The End

Deserves more than 5 stars....
By Robert Busko
The Yankee Years by Joe Torre and Tom Verducci has received a large amount of pre-release press especially from the New York media, but also the L. A. Times. I can't remember a book release in the recent past that has garnered so much attention before anyone has had a chance to read it. Even Steinbrenner is curious about the books contents. He should be.

The Yankee Years is a measured and thoughtful look at the years Joe Torre managed the Yankees, 1996-2007. During that time he got to and won four World Series out of five, not an easy task for anyone. Torre also stopped much of the ridicule he received from the New York media upon his appointment. If winning four World Series doesn't prove you're worthy of the job, nothing else will. The fact of the matter is that Joe Torre became the most beloved Yankees managers of all time winning the respect of the fans and his players.....also not an easy task given the list of outstanding players he worked with.

Not being a part of professional sports means that most of us read these kinds of books with a fascination made up of a combination of awe and disgust. Our only window into professional sports is comprised of the media, written and electronic and then watching the games as they come to us, one after another as the season progresses. I say this, because that means books such as the Yankee Years become our "inside" story; our life line and private peek into the insanity of what has become "professional sports."

The Yankee Years has already aggravated several A-list players that are mentioned in the book. A-Rod, reportedly referred to as A-Fraud by his team mates, and David Wells just to name two people who may not be happy with the publication of The Yankee Years.

Well written and very readable, the Yankee Years is above all else interesting and will be a book any baseball fan will want to read regardless of your team affiliation. Let's face it, the Yankees are the most storied of professional baseball teams and reading about them interests us even if we aren't fans.

Joe Torre's The Yankee Years is worth reading. I highly recommend.

Peace

A Yankees tour of duty with Torre.
By Jaime Contreras
Tom Verducci has captured the man that Joe Torre was during his 12 years (1996-2007)at the helm of the New York Yankees. This is an excellent account of the journey of Torre during his challenging and very successful run as the manager of the always controversial and winning baseball team. Torre shares his colorful and challenhing relationship with George Steinbrenner, dealing with the FO, handling personalities and managing the role of being the skipper of the iconic Yankees. The book comes alive largely due to Verducci's realistic capturing of the main players: the Yankees brass (Steinbrenner, Cashman, Levine, Swindal, et al), Torre and his coaches (Zimmer, Stottlemeyer, Bowa, Kerrigan, et al), and the Yankees stalwarts (Jeter, Williams, Rivera, Posada, Cone, Pettite, Williams,Rodriguez, Clemens, Wells, et al) and the world that is baseball, The readers gets it all: the player pick-ups; the prima donnas; the villains; the duds and the heroes; and the games. This is a wonderful book about the game of baseball as seen from the Yankees historical period of 1996 to 2007. Any fan of baseball will be enthralled and entertained. Play Ball, Yankees style!

There are many good textbooks already in existence that cover the theory of finite element methods for advanced students. However, none of these books incorporate ANSYS as an integral part of their materials to introduce finite element modeling to undergraduate students and newcomers. In recent years, the use of finite element analysis as a design tool has grown rapidly. Easy-to-use, comprehensive packages such as ANSYS, a general-purpose finite element computer program, have become common tools in the hands of design engineers. Unfortunately, many engineers who lack the proper training or understanding of the underlying concepts have been using these tools. This introductory book is written to assist engineering students and practicing engineers new to the field of finite element modeling to gain a clear understanding of the basic concepts. The text offers insight into the theoretical aspects of finite element analysis and also covers some practical aspects of modeling. Great care has been exercised to avoid overwhelming students with theory, yet enough theoretical background is offered to allow individuals to use ANSYS intelligently and effectively. ANSYS is an integral part of this text. In each chapter, the relevant basic theory is discussed first and demonstrated using simple problems with hand calculations. These problems are followed by examples that are solved using ANSYS. Exercises in the text are also presented in this manner. Some exercises require manual calculations, while others, more complex in nature, require the use of ANSYS. The simpler hand-calculation problems will enhance students' understanding of the concepts by encouraging them to go through the necessary steps in a finite element analysis. Design problems are also included at the end of Chapters 3, 4, 6, and 9 through 14.

Various sources of error that can contribute to incorrect results are discussed. A good engineer must always find ways to check the results. While experimental testing of models may be the best way, such testing may be expensive or time consuming. Therefore, whenever possible, throughout this text emphasis is placed on doing a "sanity check" to verify one's finite element analysis (FEA). A section at the end of each appropriate chapter is devoted to possible approaches for verifying ANSYS results.

Another unique feature of this book is that the last two chapters are devoted to the introduction of design, material selection, optimization, and parametric programming with ANSYS.

The book is organized into 15 chapters. Chapter 1 reviews basic ideas in finite element analysis. Common formulations, such as direct, potential energy, and weighted residual methods are discussed. Chapter 2 provides a comprehensive review of matrix algebra. Chapter 3 deals with the analysis of trusses, because trusses offer economical solutions to many engineering structural problems. An overview of the ANSYS program is given in Chapter 3 so that students can begin to use ANSYS right away. Finite element formulation of members under axial loading, beams, and frames are introduced in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 lays the foundation for analysis of one-dimensional problems by introducing one-dimensional linear, quadratic, and cubic elements. Global, local, and natural coordinate systems are also discussed in detail in Chapter 5. An introduction to isoparametric formulation and numerical integration by Gauss-Legendre formulae are also presented in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 considers Galerkin formulation of one-dimensional heat transfer and fluid problems. Two-dimensional linear and higher order elements are introduced in Chapter 7. Gauss-Legendre formulae for two-dimensional integrals are also presented in Chapter 7. In Chapter 8 the essential capabilities and the organization of the ANSYS program are covered. The basic steps in creating and analyzing a model with ANSYS is discussed in detail. Chapter 9 includes the analysis of two-dimensional heat transfer problems with a section devoted to unsteady situations. Chapter 10 provides analysis of torsion of noncircular shafts and plane stress problems. Dynamic problems are explored in Chapter 11. Review of dynamics and vibrations of mechanical and structural systems are also given in this chapter. In Chapter 12, two-dimensional, ideal fluid-mechanics problems are analyzed. Direct formulation of the piping network problems and underground seepage flow are also discussed. Chapter 13 provides a discussion of three-dimensional elements and formulations. This chapter also presents basic ideas regarding top-down and bottom-up solid modeling methods. The last two chapters of the book are devoted to design and optimization ideas. Design process and material selection are explained in Chapter 14. Design optimization ideas and parametric programming are discussed in Chapter 15. Each chapter begins by stating the objectives and concludes by summarizing what the reader should have gained from studying that chapter.

The examples that are solved using ANSYS show in great detail how to use ANSYS to model and analyze a variety of engineering problems. Chapter 8 is also written such that it can be taught right away if the instructor sees the need to start with ANSYS.

A brief review of appropriate fundamental principles in solid mechanics, heat transfer, dynamics, and fluid mechanics is also provided throughout the book. Additionally, when appropriate; students are warned about becoming too quick to generate finite element models for problems for which there exist simple analytical solutions. Mechanical and thermophysical properties of some common materials used in engineering are given in appendices A and B. Appendices C and D give properties of common area shapes and properties of structural steel shapes, respectively. Examples of ANSYS batch files are given in Appendix F.

Finally, a Web site at http://www.prenhall.com/Moaveni will be maintained for the following purposes: (1) to share any changes in the upcoming versions of ANSYS; (2) to share additional information on upcoming text revisions; (3) to provide additional homework problems and design problems; and (4) although I have done my best to eliminate errors and mistakes, as is with most books, same errors may still exist. I will post the corrections that are brought to my attention at the site. The Web site will be accessible to all instructors and students.

A good book for begninners in FE.
By danielm@aracnet.com
The book presents the "black box" behind the GUI. The author wrote the book especially for FE beginners. Ansys users will get the maximum benefit out of it. The book starts by explaining the various formulations applied in FEM. Then, 1D, 2D and 3D elements are presented, followed by simple and clear analytical applications in the field of structural, thermal and fluids. In the second half, the book introduces Ansys and then put it at work through a number of examples. The book/author has the merit of keeping the theory and examples simple and to the point. It is probably the only of its kind. This book is a must for beginners in the FEM.

Good Intro
By Michael L. Fraguada
This is a good book for the basics in the FE method. It does teach how to use Ansys as well but of course having a tutorial dedicated to the program itself is always a better option.
If an introduction is what you need then this book is for you, if not there are many titles out dedicated to this topic though I really recommend this book to anyone trying to learn on their own.

I loved every one of these books and highly recommend them.

I have read them all and love them. Madeline has made the characters real and I rooted for them, cried for them and celebrated with them in spirit. I have just completed her 4th book and can't wait for the 5th. She hasn't let me down yet.

Fantastic books you won't want to put down
By Reags
I picked up the first book (Crystal Magic) on a kindle deal whilst on holidays and I could not put this book down! Once I finished, I was very relieved to see that books 2 and 3 were also available immediately (and book 4 has just been published separately to the box set).
Purchase this box set - you will want to follow the story of Krissa, a teenage girl who discovers that not only is she a witch but also psychic and that the small town she lives in has strong ties to the magical side of life.
The first book introduces us to all the characters; book 2 sees a twist in the story that is unexpected and 3 follows on from this. You do need to read this in order to keep the story line straight but the story will have you staying up late, turning pages then frantically flicking to the next book.
I am waiting with bated breath for book 5 to see where Krissa and the gang end up next. There are twists and turns and it's not all lightness - there are some very dark and sad moments as well. The characters are complex and you get to know them well.

Fascinating adventure, good characters who grow as the story progresses. Interesting take on magic and time. Reading these one after another takes you on a journey that captures and keeps your interest. One of those series of books that are hard to put down. A story that can be read over and again and still keep your interest.

How Everything Became War and the Military Became Everything: Tales from the Pentagon, by Rosa Brooks

The first serious book to examine what happens when the ancient boundary between war and peace is erased.

Once, war was a temporary state of affairs—a violent but brief interlude between times of peace. Today, America’s wars are everywhere and forever: our enemies change constantly and rarely wear uniforms, and virtually anything can become a weapon. As war expands, so does the role of the US military. Today, military personnel don’t just “kill people and break stuff.” Instead, they analyze computer code, train Afghan judges, build Ebola isolation wards, eavesdrop on electronic communications, develop soap operas, and patrol for pirates. You name it, the military does it.

Rosa Brooks traces this seismic shift in how America wages war from an unconventional perspective—that of a former top Pentagon official who is the daughter of two anti-war protesters and a human rights activist married to an Army Green Beret. Her experiences lead her to an urgent warning: When the boundaries around war disappear, we risk destroying America’s founding values and the laws and institutions we’ve built—and undermining the international rules and organizations that keep our world from sliding towards chaos. If Russia and China have recently grown bolder in their foreign adventures, it’s no accident; US precedents have paved the way for the increasingly unconstrained use of military power by states around the globe. Meanwhile, we continue to pile new tasks onto the military, making it increasingly ill-prepared for the threats America will face in the years to come.

By turns a memoir, a work of journalism, a scholarly exploration into history, anthropology and law, and a rallying cry, How Everything Became War and the Military Became Everything transforms the familiar into the alien, showing us that the culture we inhabit is reshaping us in ways we may suspect, but don’t really understand. It’s the kind of book that will leave you moved, astonished, and profoundly disturbed, for the world around us is quietly changing beyond recognition—and time is running out to make things right.

Review
“A dynamic work of reportage, punctuated by savory details… It delights. The author is a chipper field guild and canny ethnographer, writing with refreshing honesty about the folk ways of the Department of Defense, which often confound outsiders… Illuminating.”  (Jennifer Senior The New York Times)

“Brooks writes with clarity and epigrammatic wit.... In impressive and often fascinating detail, she documents that the boundaries between war and peace have grown so hazy as to undermine hard-won global gains in human rights and the rule of law.”  (Harry Evans The New York Times Book Review)

“One of the most thought-provoking books I’ve ever read. It’s as if we have been sleep walking into this new world and Rosa has turned on a flashlight to show what we are doing and where we are going.” (General James Mattis (USMC, Ret.), former CENTCOM Commander)

“An important and compelling examination of the American war machine, reported from inside the Pentagon, the great beast itself. Outstanding.” (Richard Rhodes, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb)

“Ambitious and astute.” (The Washington Post)

“For anyone troubled by our murky and perpetual wars, Rosa Brooks offers a deeply challenging and delightfully provocative answer to the question: What the hell is going on here, and what can we do about it?” (Phil Klay, National Book Award-winning author of Redeployment)

“In a masterful argument, sometimes between her own contradictory feelings, Rosa Brooks shows how battle lines have been blurred. Soldiers work, and sometimes rule, in areas once the uncontested realm of civilians. It is another complex, potentially dangerous, challenge that we must work to understand. Start with this book.” (General Stanley McChrystal (U.S. Army, Ret.), former Commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan)

“Rosa Brooks asks us to confront hard but essential questions about war, peace, liberty, morality, and the rule of law. As challenging as these issues are, she has a gift for wrapping them in gripping stories and delightfully witty prose. Reading How Everything Became War and the Military Became Everything is like having a conversation with a smart, wry, and unsentimental friend who guides and pushes us toward a new set of answers.” (Anne-Marie Slaughter, president of New America and former president of the American Society of International Law)

“How Everything Became War is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the continuing evolution of the modern military, and who is prepared to engage in serious thinking about the future of armed conflict.” (Dallas Morning News)

"Brooks provides a masterful analysis of how global connectedness has created vast new responsibilities and vulnerabilities for the armed forces of the United States...." (San Francisco Chronicle)

“A trenchant, timely new book.... Approaching her sprawling subject in a rambling voice that mixes politics, human rights, history, literature, travel to desolate lands and some of her own story, Brooks produces an ambitious, courageous tome that helps both sides of the wide civilian-military divide.” (US News & World Report)

“Rosa Brooks has written the best book yet on the ‘space between’—that messy blend of war and not-war that characterizes so much of our world. As equal parts legal scholar, policy practitioner, and engaged citizen, she’s the perfect guide for a tour of our national nobility... and absurdity." (Nathaniel Fick, bestselling author of One Bullet Away)

“A hugely significant, very thought-provoking examination of how and why America's armed forces have been pulled into myriad missions beyond the ‘strictly military’ tasks in which they traditionally engaged in past decades, written by a woman uniquely qualified for such an undertaking. How Everything Became War and the Military Became Everything raises hugely important questions that should spark serious conversations in Washington and throughout the United States.” (General David Petraeus (U.S. Army, Ret.), former CENTCOM Commander and former Director of the CIA)

“In this clear-eyed account of her time at the Pentagon, Brooks, a human-rights lawyer by training, makes an eloquent case for just what is at risk.” (Boston Globe)

“By turns unsettling and brilliantly insightful, Brooks' work is a must-read for everyone concerned about national security and troubled by the U.S. military’s steadily expanding budget at the expense of social programs.” (Booklist)

“An important and insightful book.... Brooks is a clear and entertaining writer…. Her sense of humor is quite acute.” (National Review)

“Rosa Brooks is one of the most fluid, thoughtful and interesting writers in the field of national security and has lived a fascinating life as a Pentagon official, public intellectual, law professor and Army spouse. This life has informed her important and entertaining new book, an intriguing hybrid of memoir and policy analysis that is the best exposition of how it is that, a decade and a half after 9/11, we now live in a strange twilight world where the old boundaries between war and peace are being erased. There is no better guide to how and why this happened than Brooks.” (Peter Bergen, author of The United States of Jihad)

“Brooks has written a book that is both personal and provocative – a must-read for anyone interested in the inner workings of the Pentagon and how we got to the point where the military has become everyone’s favorite hammer.” (Modern War Institute at West Point)

“The question of where the lines are between war and peace, between the military and the civilian world in 21st-century conflicts that never seem to end, is among the most vexing and important in American politics today. In How Everything Became War and the Military Became Everything, Rosa Brooks deftly tackles these issues, weaving together rich analysis with personal anecdotes and stories that pull you in. It’s a book that won't just inform you, but make you think.” (P.W. Singer, strategist at New America and author of Wired for War, Cybersecurity and Cyberwar, and Ghost Fleet)

"Perceptive, inquisitive, sensitive and persuasive, How Everything Became War and the Military Became Everything is troubling but rewarding. Combining memoir, journalism and history, it is an insightful analysis of where the United States and its military sit today, how they got there and where they might turn next for more balance and restraint." (Shelf Awareness)

"In a post-9/11 world of persistent warfare... [Brooks] expertly guides readers through this confusing new terrain.... Whether she's invoking Wittgenstein's duck-rabbit image to illustrate the ambiguity of language and the importance of context, dissecting an excruciatingly difficult Hague Tribunal case assigning guilt to an obscure Croatian soldier, or drawing comparisons between a Putin-ordered assassination and an Obama-ordered drone strike, she never fails to stimulate and enlighten. Legal theorists and policymakers will approve the scholarship and close analysis; general readers will appreciate the sensitive storytelling, the wit, and the uncommon good sense." (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“This book is an important addition to the professional body of literature on the evolution of warfare, providing readers with ideas on the future of warfare and the required institutions, legal frameworks, and strategies that need to be in place to maintain stability against an increasing number of threats to the post World War II order.” (The Strategy Bridge)

"This book forces you to think hard, but it is so much fun to read you almost do not realize it."  (Huffington Post)

“Written with a casual but razor sharp wit, Brooks'... narrative is fascinating and piercing. She draws the reader into a world that one quickly beings to understand is a quagmire of complexity few, even within the highest offices of the land, fully appreciate.” (DefenceReport)

“Having read this engaging work, I find her wholly credible, delightfully readable and quite convincing. Confounded by the vexations of today’s unwon conflict, she asks more questions than she answers. But that kind of deadly ambiguity is cooked into the vile, ill-defined nature of the sprawling mess we call war these days.... If you, too, wonder what happened since 9/11 and why, you will get a lot from this fine book from Brooks.” (Army Magazine)

“This book contains keen insights from a sharp lawyer who served in important policy positions at the Pentagon... Brooks’ work is also important, in my view, to better understand how a serious-minded civilian thinks about the U.S. military.” (From the Green Notebook)

"[A] thought-provoking glimpse inside America's vast post-9/11 national security apparatus." (Publishers Weekly)

Essential reading before the 2016 election
By Judith Kelsey-Powell, Kindle Customer
Rosa Brooks has written a cogent and succinct description of the process that has brought us into the legal morass where we are in a perpetual state of war in which the laws of war no longer apply. Of course, this summary doesn't do justice to the complexity of the book, and the book can't cover the entire landscape of the complicated intersections between the military and the civilian world, i.e. the issue of the militarization of domestic police forces. It does a superb job of setting the philosophical and legal framework for the question of the nature of war (and therefore also the nature of peace) and suggests that our natural human state includes conflict. A very basic social function is managing that conflict.
Brooks contends that in our current system, military and civilian leaders don't speak the same language. Misunderstandings are so profound that if we don't find a way to build common experiences and develop the same view of the world and the problems that confront us, we are unlikely to find the appropriate responses to build a sustainable future.

Read this book if you want to see America survive as a democracy!
By Don Bay
This book should be mandatory reading for every American who cares about the direction the country is moving. It should be read by everybody in government and the military. It will scare the socks off of you, but at the same time it is a prescription for how to avoid having the military take over America whether intentionally or as a result of mission creep.

The author, Rosa Brooks, knows whereof she speaks. Originally from an anti-war background, she is a lawyer teaching at Georgetown law school who has worked in high-level positions in the State Department, in the Pentagon and has personally visited Afghanistan, Iraq, and many other hot spots around the globe. She has interviewed diplomats, generals and common soldiers.

Brooks' message is that war has changed since 9/11, that it now incorporates cyberspace, drones, nation-building and boots-on-the-ground. The military is gradually doing stuff that has been the province of the now-under-funded civilian agencies. Unfortunately, it's simply easier to let the military do it…easier but more dangerous to the health of our democracy.

Read it and get off the couch if you want to have America survive as a democracy.

Fact filled reality check about prolonged WARS.
By Maryellen Brady
Book is absolutely fascinating and informative. It is a reality check for all of USA who have lived thru these years of perpetual war. Brooks is so detailed and fact checked. Our soldiers are being used to fight for defense of country, rebuild nations destroyed by military and terrorist activities. They are in an untenable situation of having to use their own judgements as to whom is the combatant and who is not. Imagine, being the one firing the bullets that kill and maim children! Imagine being the ones who have to help clean up a drone hit hospital. PERPETUAL WAR has to be stopped. AM ppl are becoming so numbed to death of others, that our value system is in real jeopardy.

Not What I Expected
By MacDonald Counseling Services, PLLC
"Pleasure Unwoven: A Study Guide to the Film" led me to expect something more closely keyed to the film, rather than something more in the way of general background with only a few evocative discussion-starter questions. I was hoping for something more pedantic that I could use with substance abuing clients before and after viewing the film.

Not very helpful
By Mel
I got this to help teach clients and their families how addiction works, as for individuals with limited scientific knowledge, the movie can be overwhelming. (Props to the movie though, it was great.) This didn't offer much written breakdown of the important concepts or any study materials. I expected this to have activities, worksheets, or at least written explanations of the main concepts. There were about 3-4 activities in the book but they did not really illustrate the major concepts. I wanted to use this to help break down a complicated set of ideas to individuals who are beginning their recovery, and have limited cognitive function/attention span due to several years of drug/alcohol use. Especially compared to the movie, I was very disappointed.

excellent tool
By MARIE-NCC1701
I cannot say enough about this film, and the workbook is helpful for giving those visual reminders long after my group has seen the video. This film has set a new high bar by being a more adult level of format, and taking a positive approach to the topic of addiction as a brain disease.
